Recent happenings:
--------------------
1.) WELSH ANTI-PIPELINE CAMPAIGN CONTINUES ON FULL FLOW
As the corporations & authorities press on with their ridiculous &
outrageous pipeline project, activists from both South Wales & further
afield continue the campaign to stop it. On 14.2.07 activists blockaded
the main entrance road to the South Hook LNG terminal construction site.
5 people locked onto heavy arm tubes in a circle, blocking the road,
which is owned by Esso…The blockade resulted in a tailback of over 50
lorries unable to enter & many vehicles unable to leave the construction
site. This resulted in an estimated loss of £700,000 for Esso/South Hook
LNG.
For reports of more direct action, a carnival and the tree camp, see
www.fightthepipe.co.uk www.safehavenpembs.co.uk,
risingtide.org.uk/bristol/pipeline
* BIKE THE PIPE: Rising Tide's Claire Hall, 25, is cycling the length of
phase two
of the pipe, dubbed 'the pipeline to disaster' by local protest groups,
starting on Sunday 25th March in Felinder near Swansea, and finishing 122
miles later in Corse near Gloucester. Claire, who was inspired by last
years Climate Camp for Action Against Drax power station in North
Yorkshire, hopes her efforts will help to convince people that there
really are viable alternatives to burning fossil fuels. Bristol Rising
Tide: 07917 383517 or 07790 418023; bristol@risingtide.org.uk
2.) BRADFORD CLIMATE CRIMINALS REPROACHED, 21/02/2007
Concerned Leeds and Bradford residents decided to draw attention to the
activities of a number of climate criminals in Bradford city centre. Ads
for damaging air flights were modified to tell the truth: that flying is
the fastest growing cause of climate change. Several travel agents had
their misleading window displays obscured by stickers which made plain the
true cost of flying. The stickers used are available at a cost of 50p
each to anyone who wants them: just email trees@riseup.net with your
order.
http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2007/02/363737.html
3.) LONDON RISING TIDE OCCUPIES CARBON NEUTRAL CO, 21.2.07
London Rising Tide occupied the head office of the Carbon Neutral Company
(CNC, formerly Future Forests) on the day it had been invited to appear
before the All Party Parliamentary Committee on Climate Change, chaired
by…the CNC. More at://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2007/02/362941.html
4.) CHEAT NEUTRAL
‘Why not become one of our offset projects? Is loyalty part of your
nature? Or maybe you're just happy being single. You can help those who
can't help themselves - and get paid for not getting laid. Offset your
cheating now @ www.cheatneutral.com’
5.) SAVE PRIORY PARK CAMPAIGN UPDATE, 22.2.07
‘Hundreds of local people converged upon Southend Civic Centre this
evening for the Parkrally, to oppose controversial plans to widen the
A127/A1159 Priory Crescent. A decision to fund the road widening has been
awaited from the DfT since a local Public Inquiry took place in March
2004. Information from the East of England Regional Partnership Group
shows that costs have now risen to an estimated £25m for the 870 metre
length of carriageway, making it potentially ‘the most expensive stretch
of road in the world.’
www.savepriorypark.org
6.) ‘WE WANT FOOD SOVEREIGNTY, NOT BIOFUELS!’
An open letter was sent in January to the European Parliament, The
European Commission, The Governments and Citizens of The European Union,
in which several networks from Latin American countries expressed their
deep concern over the policies that are probably to be adopted to favour
the use and importation of biofuel as an alternative to fossil fuels.
Some European organisations supporting the Latin American Network position
also sent their own message to the Commission, which is urged to act to
prevent further deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and evictions of
local communities by placing a moratorium on EU biofuel targets and
obligations until the sustainable sourcing of biofuels can be guaranteed.
http://www.wrm.org.uy/subjects/biofuels/EU_declaration.html
7.) GENEVA MOTOR SHOW: ALL ARRESTED BEFORE DEMO, 19.3.07
For the closing day of the Geneva Motor Show, 10 activists were planning
to do a small demo at the inside of the Geneva motor show, deploying a
banner to point out the hypocritical discourse of the car manufacturers.
Police Detectives of the Genevan police took them all and their camera
crews in their presence in custody, and kept them for more than 8 hours
for questioning. The activists were charged with being “the alleged
authors of threats alarming the public”. One said “Apparently pointing out
the risks of climate change is equal to alarming the public and as such a
criminal act under Swiss law”.

8.) DEMO AT NORWEGIAN EMBASSY RE. ROSSPORT GAS PIPELINE, LONDON, 22.03.2007
Statoil, Norway's state owned oil company has interests in a gas pipeline
being constructed in Rossport, Ireland. Many locals oppose its
construction. The protest outside the Norwegian embassy started at around
midday and continued for more than an hour. Police were called but no
arrests made. A samba band played and one policeman complained that the
band really needed a string section. The demonstrators issued a demand to
Norway and Statoil to stop its part in this development or face a call for
a tourist boycott of Norway and disruption of Norwegian trade and commerce
to the UK.

9.) RISING TIDE SCOTLAND’S CLIMATE ACTION GATHERING REPORT
‘The Climate Action Gathering organised by Rising Tide Scotland in
Edinburgh (17.3.07) was a huge success, with people from as far as Leeds,
Newcastle, Nottingham, Aberdeen, Glasgow and Inverness taking part in
discussions aimed at looking for solutions to our climate crisis. The day
started with brief presentations about climate change followed by
discussions on what our best form of action could be. There will be a
Rising Tide Scotland meeting on the 31st of March in Glasgow;

10.) CONSTRUCTION OF OIL PIPELINES THREATENS THE BLACK SEA, 22.3.07
On 15.3.07, the Burgas-Alexandroupolis oil pipeline construction
agreement was signed by the governments of Russia, Bulgaria and Greece.
Prior to this, on February 1, 2007, the governments of Bulgaria, Macedonia
and Albania signed in Skopje the agreement on the construction of
the Burgas-Vlora oil pipeline. In 2007, Samsun-Ceyhan oil pipeline
construction through Turkey will begin. ‘The realization of these
pipeline projects is intrinsically linked with other ecologically
dangerous projects in the Black Sea region.’
For NGO statement of opposition, email: EWNC@seu.ru
11.) WOMEN PROTESTERS SHUT OIL FACILITY, NIGER DELTA, 23.3.07
‘Women of the Idheze community in the Niger Delta have again shut down oil
facilities of the Nigeria Agip Oil Company (NAOC) alleging failure to pay
compensation for damages caused by chemical waste fluid of the firm
flushed into the community. Recently, chemical waste from the rig site was
discharged into the swamp of Idheze leading to the death and destruction
of aquatic life. Many dead aquatic animals were still afloat in the ponds
yesterday. The women had early in December 2006 seized oil facilities
belonging to Agip, owing to the failure of the company to implement an
earlier agreement signed with the community on their entrance into their
land. They revealed that a spill led to the death of seven adults and
three children and also destroyed economic trees and crops in 1982. The
women carried placards, barricaded the main entrance of the company's
facilities and turned back all workers.’

The demonstrators issued a demand to
Norway and Statoil to stop its part in this development or face a call for
a tourist boycott of Norway and disruption of Norwegian trade and commerce
to the UK.
