British cash behind bid to combat Mugabe

Top Tories backing pro-democracy trust are accused of promoting their own interests, report Pete Sawyer and Martin Bright

Sunday May 21, 2000
The Observer

A prominent group of British and American politicians and businessmen - many with energy and mining interests in Zimbabwe - are behind an international organisation to fund opposition to the regime of Robert Mugabe.

The Zimbabwe Democracy Trust, whose patrons include former Tory Foreign Secretaries Malcolm Rifkind, Douglas Hurd and Geoffrey Howe has been accused of using the organisation as a cover for promoting the interests of Western multi-nationals in the troubled region.

Violence erupted in the southern African country when veterans of the colonial struggle began occupying the farms of white settlers and attacking members of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change. So far about 19 supporters have been killed and around 400 homes destroyed or occupied.

According to ZDT literature, the organisation 'has the simplest of goals: to help the democratic will of the people flourish'. But The Observer can reveal that several of the patrons of the newly formed trust are directors of companies which have substantial commercial interests at stake in Zimbabwe. ZDT keeps its membership secret for fear of reprisals from the Mugabe regime, but The Observer has discovered that they largely come from the white business community in Zimbabwe.

In April, ZDT organised the visit to London and Washington of Morgan Tsvingirai, the leader of the Movement for Democratic Change, the main opposition group in Zimbabwe. During the visits he met British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook and the US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Susan Rice.

The visits followed a visit to South Africa with an itinerary which included meetings with prominent figures in the business community, including the mining giant Anglo-American, which has interests in Zimbabwe.

The driving force behind ZDT is Sir John Collins, the Zimbabwean Chairman of National Power, Britain's largest energy company, who organised a letter to the Times, published in April, calling for free elections. He did not say his company had substantial interests in Zimbabwe; in 1998 National Power won a $1.5 billion contract to develop a power station in the country.

Sir Malcolm Rifkind has a long-standing connection to the country where he worked as a lecturer prior to independence. He works for the Australian mining company Broken Hill Proprietary which has been involved in a wrangle with the Mugabe government over a mine in Zimbabwe.

Former US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Dr Chester Crocker is another patron - a director of Ashanti Gold Fields, which owns Zimbabwe's largest gold mine. When approached by The Observer, he said: 'I have nothing personally to gain from supporting the Zimbabwe Democracy Trust. They were reaching out for like-minded people and I am like-minded.'

Lord Hurd, who has no known interests in Zimbabwe, said that the patrons of ZDT were aware that some people would accuse the organisation of neo-colonialism: 'The risk was in our minds when we decided to proceed, but we are not going to just sit with sticking plaster on our mouths. If anybody chooses to make xenophobic and racist comments about what we are doing, then so be it.'

Concerns about 'European' funding of the MDC were raised by South African Ministers visiting Britain last week with President Thabo Mbeki.

Analysts and advisers close to the MDC have raised concerns that Zimbabwe Democracy Trust could be playing into Mugabe's hands by allowing him to suggest the opposition is a front for white 'Rhodesian' business interests.

John Makumbe, lecturer in political science at Harare University and a supporter of the MDC, said: 'It cannot be ruled out that the ZDT viewed the Movement for Democratic Change as a way of facilitating their own interests. It is largely white Rhodesians who are backing the trust. Morgan is fully aware of the ZDT agenda'

On Friday, Harare's Herald newspaper, which acts as the mouthpiece for Mugabe, claimed that American and British financial interests were plotting to overthrow the Government. ZDT has threatened to sue over the claims. Zimbabwe Democracy Trust spokesman Patrick Robertson said: 'The ZDT was set up to make sure there is a free and fair election in Zimbabwe. All our patrons have been involved in the country in one way or another. All the more reason to want to protect it.'

David Anderson, a Zimbabwe expert at London University's School of Oriental and African Studies, said: 'The Movement for Democratic Change is backed by a mixture of self-serving Europeans and those who are genuinely liberal. The opposition wants to remove Mugabe and corruption, but they are not radicals.

'They get support from the lower orders, as any opposition would, but they don't really represent the landless.'

Anti-democratic brits and US seek to ovethrow the legit govt of Zimbabwe

24.03.2007 23:35

I hail china to for cocking a snook at the neocolonials:US/UK/AUstralia, all of whom preach democracy and sovereignty, while practicing something else. In US, the foreign funding of a political party is ILLEGAL.

Combat Mugabe? That language makes it seem Mugabe is a threat to the UK! How? Weve seen US/UK illeghally invade iraqi and afghanistan, kill hundreds of thousands of people, manipulate the economy and government and sow chaos. They will do the same in Zimbabwe.

ZDT is the british equivalent of the ameriacn NED, which backed the aborted coup in Venezuela. Dont be fooled by their brazen lying rhetoric. All they are interested in is neoliberalism taking root in Zimbabwe and mining interests. NOT the people of Zimbabwe..

Just look to Iraq and you see the future of Zimbabwe.

- that well known tool of imperialist fascist running dogs:

"URGENT ACTION
Zimbabwe: Fear for safety/ Ill-treatment/ health concern

PUBLIC AI Index: AFR 46/017/2006

UA 247/06 Fear for safety/ Ill-treatment/ health concern

ZIMBABWE Lovemore MATOMBO (m), President of Zimbabwe Congress of Trade
Unions (ZCTU)
Wellington CHIBHEBHE (m), Secretary General of ZCTU
Lucia MATIBENGA (f), First Vice-President of ZCTU
Hundreds of members of the ZCTU and Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA)
Five babies

Amnesty International is gravely concerned by credible reports that members of
the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU), including those named above, have
been beaten at Matapi Police Station in the capital, Harare. They were
transferred to Harare Central Police Station on 14 September. Hundreds of
members of the ZCTU and women's organization Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA) are
also reported to be detained in Harare and other urban centres in Zimbabwe.
Members of ZCTU and WOZA are being held in a number of police stations, without
access to lawyers, adequate food and medical care. Five babies are thought to
be detained along with their mothers, who are WOZA members. There are serious
concerns for the health and safety of all those held.

On 13 September in Harare, Lovemore Matombo - ZCTU President, Wellington
Chibhebhe - ZCTU Secretary General, and Lucia Matibenga - First Vice-President
of the ZCTU, were arrested while attempting to engage in peaceful protest about
deteriorating social and economic conditions in Zimbabwe. Other ZCTU members
were also arrested and detained in Harare, Beitbridge, Bulawayo, Mutare and
other urban centres. On the eve of the protests, on 12 September, in an
apparent pre-emptive action, police had also reportedly arrested a number of
ZCTU leaders at their homes and offices in Rusape, Gweru, Chinhoyi and Kariba.
Many of them are still thought to be in detention in deplorable conditions.

On 11 September, over 100 WOZA members were reportedly arrested ahead of a
planned peaceful sit-in at Town House in Harare, to protest against
deteriorating services in the capital city. Over 100 members of WOZA, and five
babies, have reportedly been detained since 11 September at various police
stations, including Harare Central Police Station, Rhodesville Police Station
and Mbare Police Station in Harare, and Makoni Police Station in Chitungwiza.
Among those arrested and detained at Harare Central Police Station was a
pregnant woman who reportedly became unwell while in police custody. Her
whereabouts and condition remain unclear, and police have failed to keep her
lawyer informed of her situation, despite numerous requests.

Amnesty International understands that all those held have been detained as a
consequence of exercising their right to peaceful demonstration. Amnesty
International believes that all those detained for engaging in peaceful protest
should be immediately released.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Human rights defenders operate in Zimbabwe under very restrictive conditions.
The government of Zimbabwe restricts operations of civil society through
repressive legislation such as the Public Order and Security Act (POSA) and the
Miscellaneous Offences Act (MOA). Police across Zimbabwe reportedly denied ZCTU
organisers permission to hold peaceful demonstrations on Wednesday 13 September
2006 after being notified – a requirement under the POSA."

China in Africa

25.03.2007 11:45

China is investing all over Africa, not just Zimbabwe. Trade with Africa is booming, up 40% just in the last year. And the Chinese have 16,000 doctors working in African countries. Chinas boom has lifted more people out of poverty domestically than all the worldwide Western loans and aid ever did or could, and now they are repeating that in Africa. Africa could be a rich continent, rich in natural resouces still, but it has been exploited by the West for so long it hasn't had a chance - and the US and Europe are going to lose out there unless they follow Chinas lead and start investing both in African business and African social programmes.

Amnesty's Dishonesty and JB's Ignorance

03.04.2007 14:04

Unders the guise of being objestive Amnesty claims to be concerned with the rights of opposition organizations and "civil society", particularly those of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU). However, like the MDC (a creation of ZCTU see last paragraph of  http://www.zctu.co.zw/html/about.shtm ) ZCTU themselves have deployed violent tactics to foster civil unrest to abet the UK-US regime change agenda. Amnesty pretends ZCTU is not controlled by imperialist, while they consult with Christopher Dell, US Ambassador to Zimbabwe regularly. Dell makes no secret of this. Not to mention ZCTU also consults with the AFI-CIO that has been used by the CIA for decades to advance US capitalist interest domestically and abroad.

These types of inner workings that use labor unions are an open book. Philip Agee, former CIA operative and author of Inside the Company: CIA Diary, confirms this when he revealed that “…the successes of revolutionary movements in Ethiopia, Angola, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Grenada, Nicaragua and elsewhere brought ‘cold warrior’ Democrats and ‘internationalist’ Republicans together to establish in 1979 the American Political Foundation (APF). The foundation's task was to study the feasibility of establishing through legislation a government-financed foundation to subsidize foreign operations in civil society through U.S. non-governmental organizations. Within APF four task forces were set up to conduct the study, one for the Democrats, one for the Republicans, one for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and one for the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO).” Agee describes how this effort developed mainly into the U.S Agency for International Development—now doing overtly what the CIA used to do covertly to advance the neo-colonial agenda of the West.

Amnesty needs to do more research and not ignore the right of sovereignty to the people of Zimbabwe. ZCTU claims to protest in blame of Zimbabwe's economic crisis on the governement but igonore that it started with the World Banks Economic Structural Adjustment Programs (ESAPs) of 1991, which in fact have been abandoned by Zimbabwe in 2000, under the leadership of those they blame. Regardless of what ever criticism one could make about them accepting the ESAPs in the first place, Zimbabwe is the only African nation we can say has jettisoned ESAPs because of what they were doing to the people. The continued economic instability is due to the sanctions, of which ZCTU nor other so-called "progressives" ever makes any mention:

see Zimbabwe: The MDC Must Renounce the Sanctions
 http://raceandhistory.com/selfnews/viewnews.cgi?newsid1174238748,95238,.shtml

For the US' part the nature of the sanctions should be very clear as Senator Jesse Helms of North Carolina, the one-time supporter of apartheid Rhodesia, sponsored the bill. The law instructs American officials in international financial institutions to "oppose and vote against any extension by the respective institution of any loan, credit, or guarantee to the government of Zimbabwe," and to vote against any reduction or cancellation of debt. The law also authorizes President Bush to fund opposition media and organizations in Zimbabwe. This media is apparently where Amnesty and JB is getting thier information and analysis.

U.S. officials in international financial institutions have been joined by British and Western European officials in ensuring the near-total cutoff of foreign currency flowing into Zimbabwe, a crippling blow for a nation that has to import 100 percent of its oil and 40 percent of its electrical power supply. My question is why do many detractors of the Zimbabwe government never deal with these complexities? The civil unrest we are witnessing right now in Zim in the last weeks or so are an escalation of documented plan of regime change by powers that have never had any concern for human rights and violate them every day around the globe.
