The Zimbabwean opposition leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, has been giving details of assaults he suffered at the hands of the police, after being detained during an anti-government rally.

Mr Tsvangirai is in hospital awaiting the results of a scan on a suspected cracked skull.

He and 49 opposition activists were arrested at a rally on Sunday.

Mr Tsvangirai says he needed stitches to his head, has lost a lot of blood, and has a broken arm.

The action has been condemned by the UN Secretary General, the US and European Union.

President Mbeki and other leaders in the area have begun urgent consultations as to how to get rid of Mugabe and his useless party, the Zanu-PF.

The feeling is that only a full house cleaning will bring peace, prosperity and order back to Zimbabwe after years of corruption and chaos.
