Merseyside Anarchists: How Can We REALLY Stop The War?

Merseyside Anarchists | 11.03.2007 18:26 | Anti-militarism | Liverpool

At the first meeting of the new Merseyside Anarchist group we discussed a lot of things and decided that it was worthwhile continuing with the group. We also decided that the next meeting on Thursday March 15th should look at the war in Iraq from an anarchist perspective and discuss actions for the 18th March - an international day of action against the war.

We talked about possible anti-recruitment actions and about ways that it's possible for small groups of people to affect the smooth running of the war machine. All of which could feed into the 15th.

Anarchism - or libertarian socialism - is an increasingly strong political current within society and has for a long time been championing the case for a fair, ecological and sustainable global community that may be our last best hope for humanity.

The meeting will begin next Thursday at 7.30pm, at the Liverpool social centre, in the basement next to News From Nowhere, on 96a Bold Street. All anarchists and people interested in anarchism are welcome.

alterative do you oppose

So what the alterative do you oppose? Let the Taliban take over Afghanistan and let the two tribes of Iraq slug their guts out whiles the third sit by and watches? Mmmmm ending wars are so easy… A pause for thought.

The White Man's Burden

Its so tough having to be benign and benevolent to the 'savages', doncha find Mmmmmm?

Imagine what nasty places Iraq and Afghanistan would be if we weren't helping to keep things sweet, eh?

That Saddam Hussein made it so dangerous, didn't he? Thank goodness we stopped the killing!

And who kick-started the Taliban?

Surely not western agents..........

Alternatives

11.03.2007 21:23

As L of A points out, the ongoing occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan aren't exactly helping matters. Indeed, as long as imperialism continues to crush any real alternatives in the region, there's no prospect of the violence stopping any time soon.

what if there is no way?

12.03.2007 10:21

What if there is no way of stopping the war from the part of small left wing groups in the UK? And we know the big left wing groups are not really an opposition. I mean, does it not seem strange that the Labour party leads the country to war and there are so many labour party people effectively leading the STWC. Does this not seem strange to anybody?? Is it not a fact that really, the only way the US/UK allied forces will leave Iraq or Afghanistan are if they are beaten militarily by Islamicists or Nationalists or whatever. We should still protest and do direct action (more direct! more action!) but it is clear that these things are not big factors that determine whether the state goes to war or not. Do not we all know this already? Does anyone really believe that the STWC demos really had much effect, either on British policy or on worldwide opinion? Yet, we should still protest to show our solidarity with the oppressed and those fighting back, and to educate and spread information. What if this is all a western anti war movement can do, the rest is up to those fighting back in Iraq or whatever?

If we can't stop the war any time soon...

...we will still be building up solidarity networks, which will help us in other struggles. The main aim must be to abolish capitalism itself, and create a world where war is impossible. The profit system causes wars, and the Stop The War coalition does not attack the profit system. This is why there is a need for direct action, especially with attacks on Iran in the (ahem) pipeline.
