Update 5 March 2007, 12.20: The new owners of Ungdomshuset, the Copenhagen 'Youth House', have started its demolition.

The demolition began on Monday morning (5 March) at 8 in the morning. Workmen wore masks and the company names on their vehicles were blacked out, apparently as a precaution against any reprisals.

The demolitions follows three days of clashes between supporters of the Youth House project and riot police across Copenhagen.

The confronatations began after an anti-terror squad raided and evicted the Ungdomshuset building early in the morning of Thursday 1st March, which had been occupied since the 1980s. All 35 people inside the building at the time were arrested.

The local government sold the building to a far-right Christian group in 2000, which then obtained a court order to have the squatters evicted.

About 650 people have been arrested following three nights of clashes between protesters and police. Many of those arrested hve been remanded in jail for up to two weeks.

More information will be published as it comes in.
