imobile proxy system now running (kinda)

imobile | 24.02.2007 10:31 | Indymedia

Moves to make indymedia mobile have advanced a little with the recent creation of a handheld.css media type and the trial of a proxy system that rewrites indymedia pages on the fly to strip them of unwanted code and content before delivering them to mobile users.

You can now try out the proxified version of the site by pointing your mobile browser to  http://rampart.xploiting.org/phonifier/index.php?i=0&m=0&u=https://publish.indymedia.org.uk/en/
or slightly shorter, via  http://rampart.co.nr/imobile/help.html

Give it a try and let us know what you think.

It is a bit buggy at the moment but already it vastly improves mobile access to the site by removing the three column styling, margins, padding and more. It also removes huge chunks of unwanted code such as the countries list which previously had to be scrolled past before you could even reach the newswire.

As a result, the size of the download should be significantly smaller than the 214 KB + size of the standard IMC UK home page but for some reason is actually larger (if the images are left switched on). This is because the normally indymedia page gets delivered to your browser compressed (otherwise it would total over 310 KB in size). It should be easy enough to get the converted page compressed before sending it out.

The other improvements are that there is now quick and easy access to the publish page without having to scroll down through two thirds of the page and there is no prepublish page either to waste further time and bandwidth.

It's got a long way to go but it is definitely moving forward.

Your comments and suggestions would be very useful.

Have tried using the new mobile page, with my Nokia 9300 Communicator phone.

I show you the screens on my phone, when in different parts of this site.

Cheers for the efforts here, have been trying to encourage indymedia to be able to upload info, direct from the streets for ages ...... this is real progress.
