Doug | 23.02.2007 10:15 | Indymedia | London

I am posting this from a mobile phone just to prove it can be done.

However more work needs to be done to make it easier and'cheaper.

If you don't want to download the whole frontpage then use this (gulp!) URL:

 https://publish.indymedia.org.uk/uk/servlet/OpenMir?do=opensession&sessiontype=article&language=en&to_uk=&nrmediaitems=0&nrftpitems=0&dontpost=Text+Only+Publishing

Which takes you, more or less, straight to the the publish form. From there on it is a doddle if you have a qwerty keyboard. Make sure though that graphics are turned off in you phone browser to save on cost. Also some browsers don't work so find one that does. Currently I am using the Symbian inbuilt browser because Opera Mini won't hack it on the Indy page but it works fine on other sites.

People are currently beavering away on alternatives to make mobile access much easier. When and what the outcome will be is in the lap of the Gods.

improvements coming rapidly

There is now a handheld css media type so when accessed by a decent mobile web browser the pages now display less 'junk' such as the list of other imc's on every page. However, you still end up downloading everything even if it's not displayed and with the home page weighing in at over 200 KB, that's going to add up really quickly. Additional, there is currently poor navigation if you are using a mobile but a work around is coming.

Ultimately, what's needed is a dedicated light weight site and a mock up for that can be found at  http://rampart.co.nr/imobile/help.html

So, big things coming to your small screen soon...
