I am sure that we can all agree that SUVs are not the car we want on the road but I am also sure that people who drive these cars also donate to animal rights/welfare groups. Can someone explain to me what use this is to the cause for animal liberation?
At best these should be claimed as ELF actions and not ALF.

SUVs kill animals too, and damaging the environment...er also affects the animals that live there.
Suggest you chill out on the narrowmindedness and see the bigger picture. You dont have to compartmentalise everything. Oh, have you checked out the SUVs in your town.... could be a tad more useful than posting decivise messages such as this.

To distract attention away from themselves ? You don't put your own name on an anonymous attacks after all. I'm not ALF but you yourself admit that they have more relevant targets to go after. Now the ALF have been caught or stitched up often enough that their names are public domain. That is obviously why someone chose them to take the blame for the recent DVLA etc letter bombs. Now you claim there are anti-SUV attacks also blamed on them. Looks like a concerted campaign to force the ALF to keep their heads down.
I wonder who would be orchestrating that ? That is sacrasm of course, it is perfectly obvious. Their number is in the phone book, their name starts with M and ends with 5 and they are the most active posters here, and the most active terrorists too.

actions without clear motivations

There is also quite a strong argument that if action is taken without clear motivations and aims being given it will lessen the impact and support for that action. Public perception is an important issue in any campaign. –If people here can’t see the relation between animal rights and SUV’s then its unlikely the owners of SUV’s and general public can. They, like me, might be left with the feeling that certain people are just motivated to protest for the sake of it.
That said –who says they are attaching SUV’s in Yorkshire –apart from this one site?
