The ETA member Iñaki de Juana is on the verge of death after undertaking a hunger strike to condemn his current situation. He served a sentence of 18 years until two years ago, in 2004. Before being let out, Spanish Justice Ministry Juan Fernando López Aguilar claimed that it w6as necessary to "press new charges for belonging to a terrorist organization, coercion or continued engage in terrorist activities", those were his words. He was impeached and sentenced to twelve years in prison for writing two opinion articles in the basque newspaper Gara.
Iñaki de Juana began a hunger strike on November the 7th (he previously consummated another hunger strike which lasted 63 days, August-October 2006), which means that he is now for 101 days in this second hunger strike, spending the last two months confined in an hospital and tied up to his bed to force his feeding through tubes. The doctors in charge have warned about the risk for his life and the possibility of entering a vegetative state.
