Latin America and the struggle for socialism

A Fight Racism! Fight Imperialism! (FRFI) forum on Latin America, with video showing.

A Fight Racism! Fight Imperialism! (FRFI) forum, with 'Bolivia is not for sale!' video showing at Cross Street Chapel, Cross Street, off Market Street, Manchester. Everyone is welcome to this, a public discussion on the revolutionary movements in Venezuela and Bolivia, and how they relate to the ongoing socialist struggle in Cuba. The struggle in Cuba against US imperialism is vital to all our struggles against imperialism - Cuba has time and again supported the Palestinian resistance and condemned the brutal wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Question

Will you be showing a film detailing those Cubans held in Castros political jails for calling for free elections ?

How about a report from Amnesty International detailing the horrific conditions in Havana cells for those who questioned the right of the Castro family to rule Cuba without a mandate from the people ?

Perhaps you could show an interview with those who escaped Cuba on tiny rafts such was their desire to flee the oppressive dictatorship ?

Or maybe, just maybe you will prefer to ignore all these events and continue to promote the idea that Cuba is a Socialist paradise being bullied by the USA because the reality of life in cuba is not one you want to consider is it ?

When the European Left defends a dictator who imprisones democratic peoples there is something wrong in the movement

Cuba is a human rights disgrace. Fidel is a mad dictator. Why is there no Havana Indymedia site? Anyone fancy going there to start one? No, thought not. You wouldn't need to worry about your pension if you did though - you'd quickly 'disappear' in the South American political meaning of the word.

If reality doesn't fit the model, get rid of the model, idiot!

So Cuba is a human rights disgrace because there's no 'indymedia'? presumably Britain is, because there are many. So Cuba which exports doctors, nurses and teachers is a dictatorship, but Britain which exports arms, bombs, mines and capital is not, beacuse it has indymedia. Sadly for you, reality is leaving you behind. Millions in Bolivia, Venezuela and Cuba see things rather differently, but then they don't live in a rich country with relatively privileged lifestyles.
