Public meeting tonight @ Vortex Social Centre against letting the social centre get evicted to make way for a Starbucks in Stoke Newington.
All welcome.
All welcome.
Vortex Social centre
139 - 141 Stoke Newington Church Street
N16 0UH
7.30pm Thurs 25th Jan
Background:
The Vortex Social Centre was occupied at the beginning of january and has been open for numerous and varied public events ever since.
The property developer (notorious hackney landlord richard midda) originally bought the property, threw out the old Vortex Jazz Club with the explicit intention of turning the world famous venue into a retail outlet.
Starbucks have confirmed that they are looking at opening a coffee shop on the site sometime in June although no contractts have been signed between the parties.
This leaves an opportunity to scupper Midda's plans to make a quick profit by evicting the community space.
The social centre is comitted to fighting against these plans as a means of continuing to have a radical political and cultural space on church street.

the days of the angry brigade the squats and the beatings at the local police station are well and truly over. Stokies moved on, have you? The dairy, the old methodist church and the navy hall on church street were the last of an era gone by. Stokies had it, why don't you go out to Harringay..oops sorry, forgot, you will be too far away from mummy and daddy in barnsbury and highbury...be brave, I'm sure you will be able to cope.
but my grandparents were working class...
