Holocaust could take place here!!

D.E.F1981 | 23.01.2007 14:25 | Anti-racism | Social Struggles

Taken from YouGov polls.

Intolerance and prejudice is so strong that 41% of people believe a holocaust could happen in modern-day Britain, according to a survey published this week. And 36% of Britons think most people would do nothing to stop it. The YouGov poll of 2,400 Britons, conducted to mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2007 on Jan 27th, also found 79% did not know black people were persecuted in Nazi Germany. A spokesman said:We really need to be vigilant in tackling prejudice and intolerance

I’ve looked at their site and I can’t seem to find the figures for this. Also it seems to have been carried out for the Jewish Chronicle so I’m not sure of their sampling technique. Actually scrap that –they run an on-line recruitment so unless they also do face to face data collection they are statistics are crap…they also don’t list the full question asked…

Well...

I found the article in a paper called Metro-Jan 22,07,Monday edition which as you may know is a free paper on busses and trains etc. If you look on www.metro.co.uk it may be of some help to you.If you go through it's archives you may find a link to the sources.

It's i feel a worrying article and a good reflection on Britain and it's slack Race Laws. I have seen how ignorant alot of people are on topics such as The Holocaust, homophobia and racism. Alot more education on such topics NEEDS to be brought into our schools, colleges and even our workplaces. The fact that the BPP had a meeting in a pub on Holocaust denial with that racist Renouf woman speaking, proves how little people actually care. All this in the week leading up to Holocaust memorial day. Blatent disrespect.
I'd say this article is not something to be scoffed at and i take it very seriously.

the metro?

I never never believe anything that I read in the metro. It has to be close to one of the worse newspapers. But the article came from Reuters  http://today.reuters.com/news/articlenews.aspx?type=worldNews&storyID=2007-01-19T151136Z_01_L19605849_RTRUKOC_0_US-RELIGION-HOLOCAUST.xml&WTmodLoc=IntNewsHome_C2_worldNews-1. And well, the reason people answered as they did wasn’t really explored –for example one of the quesitons was do you think that the day should mark the Holocaust, or to be a day to mark the victims of genocide everywhere? Also interesting the Nazi’s didn’t have a systematic approach to killing/sterilising black people so while I would agree they persecuted I'm not suprised that it doesn't occure to some people (because its pro. taken for granted)

Alternatively, from a glass half-full perspective, you could say...

MOST people think a holocaust WON'T happen here.

just because people think it could happen here, doesn't mean they want it to happen here..

Norville B- They don’t say how many people replied ‘don’t know’ to the question so one can’t assume that over half think it wouldn’t happen.
