PEACE CAMPAIGNERS SAY NO TO BLAIR'S WESTCOUNTRY VISIT
Peace campaigners protested against the visit of Tony Blair outside the Lympstone Commando Base near Exeter on Thursday.
The protest was organised by Exeter Stop the War Coalition and Exeter CND, calling for Troops out of Iraq and No to Trident. Despite being organised at less than 24 hours notice, with a media blackout on Blair's movements and in the teeth of gale force winds, up to 40 people joined the protest.
Amnesty International student members from Exeter University joined the protest to highlight the 5th anniversary of the opening of the Guantanamo Bay
Detention Centre. Devon Pensioners were also protesting against Blair's visit.
Lizi Allnatt from Exeter Stop the War Coalition said
"Four years ago I met Tony Blair on a Trevor MacDonald TV special immediately prior to the Iraq War. Then Blair asked us to trust him over the war, and stated that there definetly were Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq. I find it incredible that not only did Blair lie to us over the presence of WMDs in Iraq, but is also now intent on spending billions to build Trident, a new generation of WMDs for Britain."
