Close Guantánamo: Demonstration on the 5th anniversary
Amnesty International | 09.01.2007 23:14 | Anti-militarism | History | Repression | Social Struggles | London
Amnesty International is marking the fifth anniversary of the detention centre in Guantánamo Bay by calling for the closure of Guantánamo Bay. Events are taking place in London, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Cardiff and Belfast.
On 11 January 2007 it will be five years since the US authorities first transported 'war on terror' detainees to the military prison at the naval camp at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.
Half a decade on and not a single detainee has yet been put on trial. The only trials in prospect are unfair military tribunals.
Amnesty International is marking this occasion by calling for the closure of Guantánamo Bay. The organisation wants at least 300 people to support on 11 January by wearing the infamous orange boiler suit and mask to form a powerful visual representation of detainees held at the military camp.
Events are taking place in London, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Cardiff and Belfast.
