SHUT DOWN GUANTANEMO!
Thursday 11 January at 10.30 am
US Embassy Office, Temple Court, Cathedral Road, Cardiff
Five years ago the first "war on terror" detainees were transported to Guantanemo Bay. Amnesty International Wales have asked Stop the War Coalition supporters to attend this demonstration (part of a global day of action) calling for the immediate closure of Guantánamo Bay and for all other ‘war on terror’ detention centres also to be identified and closed, with detainees being properly charged before fair courts or released to safe countries.
CARDIFF STOP THE WAR COALITION A.G.M.
Meeting introduced by Lindsey German,
National Convenor, UK Stop the War Coalition.
Wednesday 24 January at 7.30 pm
Riverside Community Centre
Brunel Street (off Ninian Park Road)
All Welcome.
It has been 5 long and extraordinary years since our group was launched in a community centre in Splott shortly after the attack on twin towers on a 3 point platform:
1) Stop the War 2) No to the racist backlash 3) Defend Civil Liberties
Since then we have seen:
*Bush/Blair wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
*The war in Lebanon.
*The construction of an apartheid wall in occupied Palestine and the continued war against the Palestinian people.
*Massacres in Jenin, Fallujah, Tal Afar, Haditha, Qana, Beit Hanoun &
elsewhere.
*The biggest errosion of democracy and civil liberties in a generation: Extraordinary rendition, extradition, Guantanemo Bay, Belmarsh Prison.
*The biggest demonstrations in recent history including mass-walkouts by school students.
*The creation of the Military Families against War: It is unprecedented in post-war Britain for the families of serving British soldiers to publicly oppose a war.
*The establishment crack with top Generals criticising the Prime Minister. General Danat, head of the British army stated that British troops were exacerbating the problem and called for them to leave Iraq soon. General Sir Michael Rose, commander of British troops in the Balkans has called for Blair to be impeached.
*The 7/7 terrorist attacks.
*A surge in racism and islamophobia.
*The rise of radical governments in Latin America.
*The stepping up of hostility towards Iran and Syria.
*The pro-war leaders of mainland Europe toppled. Aznar and Berlusconi are gone. Many European countries have already pulled their troops out of Iraq.
The meeting will provide an opportunity to discuss and debate our performance in 2006 and map out a strategy for 2007. A new 8 person steering committee will be elected at this meeting (including Chair, Secretary & treasurer). Nominations will be taken from the floor.

End the killing in Iraq, stop plans for new weapons of mass destruction
•Stop Trident
•Troops out of Iraq
Tony Blair said he went to war to find weapons of mass destruction.
There were none. 655,000 Iraqis have died in that war. Now he wants to spend around £27 billion on weapons of mass destruction with the potential to slaughter 40 million people.
