Lauren Booth (Blair's sister-in-law) backs Ugly Rumours’ anti-war single

A group of anti-war musicians have released a cover version of Edwin Starr’s classic War (What Is It Good For?) under the name of Ugly Rumours. They aim to take it to the top of the charts.

From every single sold 20p will be donated to the Stop the War Coalition. The song’s video stars Respect MP George Galloway and Lauren Booth, journalist and sister-in-law of Tony Blair.

“I’ve been a supporter of Stop the War for several years, ever since it was apparent that we were going to go into Iraq,” Lauren Booth told Socialist Worker.

“Our Middle East policy is a nonsense. I’ve never backed away from being a spokesperson for Stop the War’s campaigns. I have been a left winger all my life.

“The concept of the video is that Ugly Rumours, Tony Blair’s student band, have reformed and they are playing an illegal gig on the top of the Apple building, just like the Beatles did.

“Instead of being arrested by ordinary police, George Galloway and I, both dressed as police officers, take Tony Blair away after George says they have been responsible for ‘ugly rumours’ that have caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people.

“This is a great idea. The right wing always use propaganda for their purposes, so why shouldn’t we? This is especially the case with comedy propaganda.

“I urge all Socialist Worker readers to buy the single online. Imagine having a number one single which is about arresting Tony Blair. It would be the perfect start to the new year.”
