The terrible condition of the Chechen people

Save Chechnya

The Save Chechnya Campaign is an UK incorporated non-profit organisation dedicated to highlighting the plight of Chechnya and the Chechen people.

 http://www.savechechnya.org/

2005 marks the 11th year since Russia launched her brutal war in Chechnya. Over a decade of war and repression has devastated every tier of Chechen society and killed or displaced atleast half of the pre-war population. The destruction inflicted by the Russian forces on Grozny and many of Chechnya’s main towns and villages is only comparable to that inflicted on Stalingrad or Dresden in the Second World War.

Today the brutal war continues shows with no sign of abating. Leading Human Rights organisations (e.g. Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International etc.) have documented rampant human rights abuses and disappearances of ordinary Chechen men, women and children that are happening on a near daily basis.

Despite this, the European political establishment and much of the mainstream media continue to ignore the plight of the Chechen people – unless it be to condemn and duplicitly conflate the historic Chechen struggle for freedom with the ‘War on Terror’.

The Objectives of the Save Chechnya Campaign are:

Advocate for an immediate end to all human rights abuses

To promote public awareness of the conflict

To encourage and promote any initiative which calls for an immediate, just and lasting end to the War

Advocate for the above points to be adopted as policy of the UK and EU

Fast facts

250,000 people, a quarter of the Chechen population, have been killed with a comparable number displaced.

Chechnya has more ongoing land mine casualties, many of them children, than any other place in the world.

Approximately 70% of the Chechen Republic has been classified (by the Russian Ministry of Health) as a "zone of ecological disaster” or “a zone of extreme environmental distress.”
