Pinochet given last rites

Historyman | 03.12.2006 13:31 | Repression | World

The Butcher of Chile will soon be no more....

Pinochet is on his way out, Sky is reporting he has had the last rites, 91 years, at least sixty or seventy more years of life than his victims had: so he managed to escape justice then, I hope his victims family's can now find closure.

Chile's former military leader Augusto Pinochet is in a serious but stable condition after being treated for a heart attack, doctors have said.

The 91-year-old, who was put under house arrest a few days ago, is in a military hospital in Santiago.

Gen Pinochet was in power from 1973-90, during which time more than 3,000 people were killed or "disappeared".

He is accused of dozens of human rights violations but has never faced trial because of poor health.

He was taken to hospital early on Sunday morning after suffering "an acute" heart attack and a build-up of fluid on his lungs, a statement from the hospital said.

Doctors had carried out "procedures that rescued him virtually from death," Gen Pinochet's son, Marco Antonio Pinochet told reporters gathered outside the hospital.

"He's in a pretty serious state...We're in the hands of God and the doctors."

Read about just one of his victims here (though wikipedia is a bit dry)
the wonderful Victor Jara:

Víctor Lidio Jara Martínez (September 28, 1932 – September 15, 1973) was a Chilean educator, theatre director, poet, folk singer/songwriter, and political activist.

Hope the bastard is in fucking agony.

It's not Pinochet's "Ill health" that has stopped him coming to trial, but the collaboration of scum like Jack Straw.

It's just tragic that he's escaped justice but at least we can hope he dies painfully.

the last rites?

That's really rich since I don't think he'll need them where he's going. Wonder how they got a priest to perform that - at gunpoint maybe?
