Spies in the wire(less)

A court case has revealed details of a surveillance technique using mobile phones as microphones - even when they are turned off.

An article on CNET says that the FBI has been using mobile phones as wireless microphones. The technique came to light in comments by a judge on evidence gathered using the method. What is important to note is that the technology is confirmed to exist, whereby mobile phones, even when turned off, can be manipulated to transmit information without the user's knowledge or consent. Presumably, if the phone is connecting to the network, it can be used for location finding in the same manner that the network tracks your location to suggest where the nearest bank machine is. And there's no guarantee that any surveillance is legally authorised by a judge, as it was in this story.

As if you weren't in enough trouble, FlexiSPY will now drive the last nail in the coffin of your relationship by allowing you to spy on all aspects of your spouse's phone use. The software allows a sickening amount of privacy-invading features. Not content to just let you eavesdrop on phone calls and SMS messages, FlexiSPY can also let you activate the phone's microphone remotely so you can listen in even if the phone isn't in use. There may be some justification for using this software to monitor the phones of your children, but for the $150 price tag, you should probably consider a couple of counseling sessions instead. On the other hand, if you plan to use this on a phone that you don't own, you should consider setting aside some money for bail.
