International Brigade Commemoration - SUNDAY 3rd December

James Larkin Society | 30.11.2006 16:18 | Liverpool

The James larkin Society will be holding a march and rally through Liverpool

City Centre on Sunday 3rd December to salute the memory of the anti-facist

volunteers of the Connolly Column and the International Brigades, who fought

70 years ago in the Spanish Civil War.

The Connolly Column was made up of working-class Irish Republicans,

Socialists, Communists and Trade Unionists, protestants and Catholics, who

volunteered to physically challenge the merciless rising tide of Fascism in

Europe during the 1930's.

Led by Socilaist Republican, Gaelic scholar and IRA veteran, Frank Ryan,

they fought with great distinction in Spain, as part of the 15th

International Brigade.

The James Larkin Society believes that their courage and sacrifice, and

that of the International Brigades volunteers who came from Scotland, Wales,

England and all over the world, should never be forgotten.

They all fought in defence of democracy and the rights of ordinary people

against the threat of fascism. We take inspiration from their memory, in the

ongoing struggle against Imperialism, Fascism and Rascism in the world

today.
