The old 286 computer became the 386.The 486 and 586 simply added the maths co-processor.

Ever noticed Windows 2000 and windows XP have a folder called i386.Its the one it uses for setup or updates. The reason is its still based on the 386 chip, using stepping. You don't get faster without extra memory. But i tested an old 386 tonight using upgrades from windows 3.1 to 98se with 32 meg ram.It is an old Ollivetti.I was stunned by it's performance.Web pages did'nt just open when clicked. They showed all of the content simply by a mouse hover. And it was as fast as i could move the mouseacross the page.As instantanious as light.
