For the 13th anniversary of Campsfield today, around 50 people turned up to the detention centre for asylum seekers as a show of solidarity with the detainees. Representatives from various groups, including STAR (Student Action for Refugees) showed up, and the excellent Breach of the Peace samba band kept morale high. Some asylum seekers were fully aware of our presence and were clearly responding by repeating cries of ‘freedom’ and ‘human rights’, waving a white flag out the window. This was quite distressing, although it was great to know that they could hear us. Police presence was fairly low, although of course they insisted on filming the demo.
Meanwhile employees at GEO, who ‘manage’ the detention camp, continue their daily activity of detaining and aiding the deportation of innocent people….

We will look back with shame at the way this country treats migrants.

Good to see so many people turned out - fantastic. So glad the people held inside could see and hear you and know they are not forgotten.
