"Let's hope that everyone, the war correspondents and those reading their reports, can advance in this decisive battle for humankind to achieve peace, only possible if truth prevails," said Ricardo Alarcon, president of the Cuban parliament, in his closing speech Friday to the Fifth World Meeting of War Correspondents that took place in Havana.

RICARDO ALARCON ACCOMPANIED BY TUBAL PAEZ (RIGHT) AND GABRIEL MOLINA, PRESIDENTS OF THE CUBAN ASSOCIATION OF JOURNALISTS AND THE WAR CORRESPONDENTS CLUB RESPECTIVELY.

Alarcon said that the struggle against war is not limited only to those that fight directly on the battlefield or write about it. "Today, we are all war correspondents, in the midst of a real battle against incompetence, lies and the arrogant behavior of those who believe it's possible to hide the truth as a tool to impose world domination.

Relating the issue to Cuba, Alarcon told the journalists that there are topics that are inseparable from this battle. He cited the maneuvers at the United Nations this week by the US, with the backing of Australia, in an attempt to justify the economic blockade against Cuba. A nearly half century blockade he said that violates the basic rights of an entire nation, starting with the right to life.

Alarcon also made reference to the Cuban Five, imprisoned in the United States for working to prevent terrorist attacks against the island. He noted that their case has been silenced by the US mainstream media that keeps US citizens from learning what is really happening in the world.

Gabriel Molina, president of the War Correspondents Club of Cuba, read the final declaration of the meeting.

It states that the warmongering of US political and military circles has grown as a way of imposing an even tighter control over the world's energy sources.

However, the journalists note that rejection of this imperial policy has also increased, including within the US.

The declaration ends with the message: "World leaders, Let’s bid a farewell to arms!"
