Viva! Duck Day, 11 November

A Duck | 07.11.2006 23:02 | Animal Liberation

On Saturday 11 November, Viva! is running a day of action for ducks. Ducks are possibly Britain’s favourite birds; yet, 19 million of these individuals were killed for meat in the UK last year. According to Viva! 95% of them had prison-like cramped lives. If you buy duck meat from almost any major restaurant or supermarket the animals will not have had any access to water to swim in.

Jake, the little duckling prisoner, the cartoon star of Viva’s campaign represents all the ducks trapped in intensive farms across the country. When you see ducks swimming on the river I hope you will think of Jake and the actual animals he represents, that have not been allowed the opportunity to swim.

We can all play our part in opposing this abuse, by simply not eating duck! If you would like to do more why not check out the Viva! Website to find out what else you can do.

You could even order (or download) some leaflets and give them out to people out side your local supermarket or in your town centre. If you’re to shy why don’t you leaflet door to door.

You can learn more about the campaign at www.viva.org.uk a brilliant site that has information on issues surrounding farm animals in Britain.

why are some animals more equal than others?

08.11.2006 17:32

Being a duck could be worse. I'd rather that than be a mouse, rat, fly, wasp or spider . Boy do they get it tough. At least a duck can say their life was not in vain when they are severed in port and blackberry sauce. MMMM!

The Acclaimed Carnivores Suddenly Care About "Life"

08.11.2006 21:17

How many more self-advantaged delusions will the anthropocentric come up with?

"I eat bloodied animal flesh, from slaughtered mammals and birds, but boy do i care about flies". "Now i'm the defender of 'life' and the vegan is the 'killer'".

Save The Ducks – Eat The Vegetables!

08.11.2006 22:37

Yes, us vegans are really vegetable killers. Are many animal rights groups are just a cover, for extremist anti-vegetable action **evil laugh**

As you say we are also anti-flies, as you will note we aren’t usually the ones killing them, even sometimes going out of our way to save them, but, its all part of the plan.

- And if you believe that, well, you must be a meat-eater!

Its not that I care deeply about flies or indeed poultry, cattle and other farm-yard animals. I was being sarcastic.

I am happy to let vegans eat whatever they want to, as long as they leave others eat what they want to…surely we all have that right in life?

My attitude no doubt comes from my enjoyment of fishing as a young boy. Learning how to catch fish, kill them, gut and clean them, cook them and then enjoy eating them does that to you. And it just as well people are able to do this, or we would never have evolved, at least not at the rate we have. Those who do not believe in evolution need to ask why did God give us that lifesaving ability, if it’s not for the using of?

So, as for ducks living in cramped conditions, well I can think of far more worthy causes to be championing. In all frankness I'd be more concerned about any artificial chemicals or additives within the duck meat. Or indeed its freshness. Not to mention the welfare of the workers in the processing plant.

Spending your efforts fretting over the welfare of fluffy little ducks when there are huge numbers of children living below the poverty line in the UK, and thousands being blow to bits in Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine simply looks like your priorities are all wrong. It even sends out the message of a distorted picture of morality within this country. And what a paradoxically callous message that would no doubt send to those who have lost loved ones in the process. Almost qualifying as passive aggression perhaps?

"surely we all have that right in life?"

I'm assuming that doesn't include those individuals that comprise animalkind?

Moral Flap

I think you crazy mixed up people (sic) may have already answered this question but for the sake of clarity:

If you had the choice between saving the life of a child or a duck which one would you save?

live and let live

So your saying “live and let live” well, yes then, but let the animals “live” as well!

We can impart compassion for more than one group you know! Just because we care about other sentient life does not mean we don’t care about people as well.

We all have feelings (human or non) so theirs no good reason to make others suffer just for enjoyment.

Has any message (initially typed on here) proposed a choice between an individual child and an individual DUCK? No!

It's always the same with you bloody self worshipping humanists:humans vs animals. An ultimatum thats rigged from the beginning.

The same false oppositional duality was used to justify historical, and present, injustices :

WHITE VS BLACKS
WOMEN VS MEN
CHILDREN VS ADULTS
ANIMALS VS HUMANS

Tim - nice but...

10.11.2006 11:54

..the question remains:
If you had the choice between saving the life of a child or a duck which one would you save?

People deserve equal rights, but, animals and humans DO NOT deserve equal rights...
For example, you Tim are more deserving than any rat. Or perhaps you would disagree?
Maybe you seriously believe that all fishermen deseve to be imprisoned for murder...?

Equal Respect(not rights)

10.11.2006 20:20

Well,i do not believe in this domineering legal system,so your question(or statement) of "rights" is irrelevant to me;and to the so called "fisherman" as they are legally protected, and sanctified,to destroy the oceans and slaughter marine mammals, sea birds and fish(who are not swimming vegetables like some anthropocentrics think) for industrial alleged "civilisation".

The earth, and it's inhabitants,we're in a much better state when there weren't industry legislating courts with the accompanying permanent legal sanctuary.

Animals are better than humans

11.11.2006 01:44

You are about a million times more likely to be killed by another human being, than by an animal. You are also a million times more likely to be assaulted (or whatever the animal equivalent is) by another human being, than by an animal.
Human beings hurt other human beings because they are neurotic. They were abused as children, and the worse the abuse they suffered, the more likely they are to inflict suffering on other living beings, animal and human.
Animals don't form stupid cults (like Islam) and murder other animals because they refuse to join. Animals don't have dictatorships, where a tiny minority of a herd or group of animals force all the other animals to work for them and pay for the influx of animals who want to kill them... (Unlike Blair and his mass immigration policy... or the jews who run the US Congress and the Whitehouse, and make Americans work to pay $500 BILLION for the Jewish war against Iraq.)
Animals don't breed with ugly animals to form mutants, whereas 99.9% of human beings are ugly mutants. The normal humans are the ones you know as 'beautiful'.
Animals love their children and know how to bring them up properly. Only about 1% of human beings are capable of this.
Animals don't rape their own children. Millions of humans do, every year.
Animals aren't paedophiles, nor gay, nor do they seek to copulate with the elderly. Millions of humans do.
Animals don't grow up having been abused, to try to ruin the lives of anybody they can. Humans do, in their hundreds of millions.
Animals don't murder their unborn babies by cutting them up inside their wombs. Animals are beautiful and perfect, and the only beings on earth who are capable of real love. What a pity you will never know this beauty, human.

Nice and simple

If you had the choice between saving the life of a child or a duck which one wou

17.11.2006 08:33

The question, like the old chestnut trotted out to pacifists, "what would you do if a [Nazi, communist, jew, Osama Bin Ladan, insert fashionable enemy of moment] was raping your daughter", is irrelevent. The fact is nobody is raping anyone, and nobody's child will be killed if ducks are rescued.

In fact quite the reverse. As well as being unspeakably cruel, meat eating is responsible for environmental destruction, climate change, habitat destruction, logging of forests, kicking pooor people off land, diverting grain from third world children into beasts, obesity, diebetes and cancer. All of which are killing children. So the real choice is not "a duck or your child", but "a duck AND your child".

From a more philsophical point of view the assumption seems to be.

X will save a child in preference to a duck if s/he has time to save only one of them.

Therefore children have rights and ducks do not.

By the same logic.

I would save my mother in preference to an internet troll if I had time to save only one of them.

Therefore mothers have rights but internet trolls do not.
