Customs and Excise. Custom duties are taxes levied on certain imports, e.g. tobacco, wines and spirits, perfumery and jewellery: Excise duties are levied on certain goods produced (e.g. beer) and incl. purchase tax; or on licences to carry on certain trade (sale of wines and spirits, etc.) within a country. In the U.K. both come under the board of Customs and Excise; in the U.S.A. Excise duties are classed by the Customs Bureau.
