Shell Offices Raided in Solidarity with Rossport

G Holden | 01.11.2006 15:22 | Rossport Solidarity | Climate Chaos | Ecology | Social Struggles | Sheffield

Shell Gas offices near Chesterfield were occupied today, while a simultaneous noise demo outside woke up Shell staff to our feelings about the multinational’s abuse of the Rossport people and their environment.

Shell don't have a sign in their building -why?

Campaigners had to use sophisticated techniques and technology to overcome the electronic door security and gain access to the building. So they found an old cardboard box and wrote the address of the office on it with felt tip. They then, cunningly, rang the doorbell and said they had a delivery, at which point the door was opened and the protesters walked in.

Meanwhile the banner was unfurled outside the building and the noise started up. What wonderful tunes the protesters played on their hooters, dustbin lids, whistles and sirens. The glorious music was so attractive that Shell staff stopped work to peer out of the windows and read the banner. So any Shell staff in the building, who had not been given a leaflet by the occupiers, certainly got the message.

After about 30 minutes the protesters took a 5 minute break to eat homemade flapjack and generally mutter about the slow response times of the local constabulary. They finally turned up with their video camera after about 45 minutes so we gave them another 15 minutes of music before heading off.

Shell should be on notice that we will are fully behind the people of Rossport in their struggle against the greedy fatcats at sHELL.

hey, well done and everything, but this reads like we went in we rang the door, there was no security no opposition no nothing and we said hi look at us how clever and cool and we walked out to take some pics of ourselves and then waited somemore so we could have some more pics with cops in my ipod and then we had that we went home to post it in indymedia.

like shell is REALLY fucking people in southamerica and africa and asia and we have a jolly picknik in the UK and WAIT for the federal police and have a laugh.

next time take a bazooka, and hiding in the bushes. you know you have 45 minutes to get away.

after all the people dying in oaxaca this is sad middle class pissing arround till you get a "real capitalist job".

dont call it an action and dont post it in the IMC, because with that title we are going to read it and waste our times and dispair a bit more.

asta la victoria, 2 cañas por fabor!

or this was one of these kids block revolution thing? or else something else happened and something went wrong, and we are all oaxaca and you can explain here? and that any way it not personal... but where is that SHUT-THEM-DOWN! spirit?!! more like SHUT-D-FUCK-UP! ( soon to appear in the shops ISB:999-999-999 £4,39 ) salu!

Good one, keep the campaign alive,
Constant, unpredictable action like those, ought to keep them on their toes, and eventually will receive media coverage (that is outside of indymedia).
while i know these actions can be tiresome, and even look pointless to some, I am sure they are talking about them with increasing discomfort at shell board meetings.
This campaign is one of the best planed and executed campaigns I know, it's slow and progressive, and is intensifying in proportion to the need.
All of us can learn many valuable lessons about running a long term, calculated campaigns from you guys.
Don't ever stop, there is still a long way to go, but i am sure you guys have it in you, and that you will make it pay off.
You should write a book about the campaign organisation.
This is the envy of all of us, keep it up, we will help too.

Good action, well done....Let's go and visit/occupy/picket all the offices of Shell UK like this. Find them on the Shell website! The address of this office, by the way, is :

Unit 53, M1 Commerce Park, Markham Lane, Duckmanton, Chesterfield, S44 5HS. Tel 0845 0765544.

So now Brad can go with his bazooka and show us how to do it!
