In the past year alone Shell’s activities have inflicted damage on the people and the environment in the Niger Delta (Nigeria), Durban (South Africa), Sao Paolo (Brazil), Sakhalin (Russian Federation), Pandacan (Philippines), Curacao (Netherlands Antilles), Port Arthur (Texas, USA), and Norco (Louisiana, USA).

Rossport in north-west Ireland looks set to join this unhappy list. In September Shell used the brute force of the police to break though blockades by peaceful local residents so it could start work in its massive refinery in this beautiful pristine environment.

A call-out for an international day of action against Shell has been made by South Durban Community Environmental Alliance.

The 10th November will mark the 11th anniversary of the execution by the Nigerian state of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight Ogoni colleagues, for campaigning against the devastation of the Niger Delta by Shell.

So far activists from 13 countries have committed to take action against Shell worldwide including thousands who are planning to shut down refineries and other Shell facilities.
A talk and film show about the Rossport struggle will take place at the Sumac Centre on Weds 8th Nov at 7pm. Those interested in the day of action could meet up after or during this event?
