Climate change can be stopped

27.10.2006 09:39

A new campaign and website have been launched, "Can I have the Bill please?", calling for the government to introduce a Climate Change Bill in the next Queen's Speech. The proposed bill has the support of a range of groups including Friends of the Earth and the Women's Institute, who are also campaigning strongly on this important issue.

The purpose of the Climate Change Bill, published in full on the website, is to set the UK on a path to a 60% reduction in carbon emissions by the year 2050 – as recommended by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Crucially, it is also designed to "enable policy to be informed by, and adjusted according to, the latest authoritative, independent, scientific evidence."

However, the proposed Climate Change Bill needs your support - so make sure your voice is heard on this important issue.

How can I help?

At the "Can I have the Bill please?" website, you can:

Send your own personal message to Tony Blair on Climate Change

Messages will be submitted to the Prime Minister before the Queen's Speech is published on November 15th

As stated on the website, "Your support will help make a world of difference."

You can also leave more general thoughts and comments by using the comments link at the botton of this page.

"Today the Prime Minister failed to confirm that he will include a Climate Change Bill in the Queen's Speech. So I am now launching the 'Can I have the Bill please?' campaign to pressure Tony Blair to confirm that he will publish a proper bill in November.

"We've got till the 15th of November to ensure that the Government publish a proper bill in the Queen's speech – and I want the people to get behind this campaign and show this Government that they must act to make a difference for the future of our environment."
