Menwith hill is the controversial US army base located between Harrogate and Skipton.

The base is isolated, and staff and their families who live in Harrogate need somway to get up there so the base operates buses.

THESE PICK UP ONCE AN HOUR from Cold Bath Road, Harrogate opposite the small Sainsbury's.

There are 2 types - the traditional yellow american school bus type, (which operates on evenings after 7) and the coaches. The US base have come up with a special system so their workers can tell the differences between tourist coaches and the base coaches - a yellow card is in the back window! This is not a joke.

TO get on the buses you need a base security pass, but if you show the driver any old crap he'll probably let you on! The journey takes about 20 minutes and once you get to the base, an armed guard gets on the bus and checks passes again. The armed guards are a lot more security conscious than the bus drivers. Once you get past this point you are free to enjoy the 'delights' of Menwith Hill US base! Including the bowling ally, Tony's pizzas, the bank, gift shop, or even a game of baseball on the onsite field with a spectacular view of the golfballs!
