Social Centre Squat in Preston,'Viva Six Fingers'

Jonathan Cottam | 14.10.2006 20:29 | Social Struggles

A few anarchists in Preston have set up a squat which at the moment we are in the middle of repairing. The squat will be used as a social centre but help is required.

The squat is to be called 'Viva Six Fingers' after an old man in the Spanish revolution who defended his home and family from fascist attack, killing several fascists and saveing two of his family befor his cottage was burnt down. We are without electricity and water, although we now have a generator temporarily in place, and have made a lot of progress secureing the place. The cetre was an important part of the local community and we want it to serve that purpose again. It is due to be demolished and turned into luxury flats.

We would like any one who is interested to contact us and get involved.

We used to run a few squats in Avenham (Preston) namely Latham st and Burstow st in the 80's.
Hope it all works out for you and the community. All the very best.

Nice one!

We also need people who know electricals and plumbing. We are planning a fireworks night on Nov 5th,it would be great if people could come to that.

Strange choice of dates

Is that the same november the 5th that is a celebration of the execution of a man who objected to the cruel and discriminatory way people were oppressed by parliaments 'democratic' means?

Or maybe the November the 5th that is used to burn effigies of the leader of the roman catholic church. by supporters of the church of england. which in real terms translates to the perpetuation of the victimisation of catholics in Ireland amongst other places.

I have no favour for either leader of these two churches but am struggling to see why you would hold such a celebration on the 5th - what do you intend to celebrate in summer the glorious 12th?

Typical LEP

The local rag, the Lancashire Evening Post, in typical style quotes the only resident who as negative things to say against the occupation, meanwhile we have had positive comments from everybody who as had any association the social centre.

Still going?

24.10.2007 11:00

Is this still going? I can't really do much, as I have a little baby, but I'll help out however I can. It would be nice to meet some people who have similar views in the area.

what do people think about the idea of a housing co-op? It's not a squat, but it is taking the power over housing away from the fat cats and into the hands of the people, and you could set it up as a proper community, with communal areas and some shared resources, lots of community support and a new way of living. It's also a bit more reliable then a squat so kids and so on would have a more stable home. I've been looking at the old sheltered housing building in Plunginton and dreaming...

I really think it's the way forward for housing. I've been on the diggers and dreamers site but not been able to find anyone from Preston.
