Don't raise interest rates because we're running out of water: newspeak

Australia: Interest rates

Mr Vaile has also warned the Reserve Bank that any rise in interest rates would be a severe blow during the current drought?

It is believed the affect on farm production is so great that grain will need to be imported from overseas, and Australia's export levels will drop significantly.

Mr Vaile says it is a tough time.

"Rural Australia is hurting at the moment and with the level of farm indebtedness, an interest rate rise would be a very, very serious blow to rural Australia at the moment," he said.

=================================

It's a tough time for howhard too Mark especially if we have the third interest rate rise before the end of the year?

Seems emotive reasons like the crying drought calls MAY HELP FORCE A decision by the Reserve Bank not to lift interest rates to pull hoHARd out of his political crisis?

TRUST ME

But it is a pity that howhard has to stoop so low as to play on the drought for his political ass. And use mark vaile to do his dirty work. You can bet howard will back up vail's calls today.

Aust in grip of worst drought ever: scientists

The Federal Government has been told Australia is in the grip of its worst drought ever, and the future for farming and the environment is bleak.

Scientists have briefed Government ministers on the seriousness of the water shortage.

As the nation approaches another El Nino event, experts like Wendy Craik from the Murray-Darling Basin Commission, are making frightening predictions.

"If we don't get a decent break it's very possible that our storages could be empty by the end of April-May next year," she said.

"We really are continuing to break new ground and try to work out what to do. Basically we want to pray for rain."

National Farmers Federation (NFF) chief executive Ben Fargher says the effect on farmers is worrying.

"It's not isolated to a particular region, it is dry across the whole country," he said.

Deputy Prime Minister Mark Vaile says the Government is awake to the threat.

"We cannot underestimate the seriousness of this circumstance," he said.

"The inflows into the Murray-Darling are at their lowest levels ever."

Liberal Senator and farmer Bill Heffernan says even drinking water is running out.

"We are now faced with the prospect of some communities actually having their domestic water at risk," he said.

Senator Heffernan says the agricultural water use in the Murray-Darling Basin must be cut.

"The Murray-Darling Basin is in a state of catastrophic mismanagement and we need to do something about that," he said.

"Really that's code for removing some water farming activity in the long-term, I'm not saying this is going to happen overnight, but we are faced with a short-term crisis."

In relation to the so called scarcity of water.

2nd Renaissance -32

Then the penny drops, literally. The earthlings are selling water, they are treating it as a commodity. For the sellers of water this means that the scarcer fresh water is the higher the price and the greater the profit. There is still CAPITALISM on Earth; a system that became redundant in most galaxies aeons ago. No wonder water is scarce here.

-------------------------------------------------
Peak nonsence!

In relation to the rise in petrol prices this year 'scarcity' calls also prompted corporate greed by the oil companies who soon changed their mind about peak oil. Peak oil is the reason to project 'scarcity' the BEDROCK OF THE CAPITALISTS.

In that period how much money did the oil companies make?

'scarcity' and not because they couldn't find or process any oil this year.

As soon as howard handed out money to change from oil to gas then suddenly the petrol prices went down. I don't blame howard here just the oil companies. But it shows clearly the example of how the capitalists can make a quick buck by making commodities scarce.

-----------------------------------------------

Howard's play on 'water scarcity' to lift his political aspirations is below the belt of ethical considerations in relation to water resources that should never be used by the parrot press or the govt for a political wedge. I think water resources claim a more serious think tank than that of interest rates and howard's political nightmares.

Communication is like fire, air, and water it cannot be bought or sold because it belongs to the community.

Australia's Terrorism Wake Up Call [164]

The horrific bombings of the Sari Club and Paddy's Bar in Bali, on October 12, 2002, considerably strengthened the hand of the CoW in pursuing the War on Terror. Here was an opportunity to harden the hearts of the Australian and US public against Islamic fundamentalists. It was also a chance for the Indonesian government to justify harsh measures in the war against terrorists and secessionists, such at those in the province of Aceh.
