Teachers STRIKE IN GREECE!

A from athens | 03.10.2006 21:31 | Education

The struggle of the teachers in primary and secondary education for higher wages and free education!

The Greek goverment is pursuing to implement several changes in the greek educational system. For months now students together with tachers have been protesting against the goverment and bosses attempts to privatise sectors of the greek educational system and to create private owned universities.Thousands of people throughout all over greece went to the streets and all 304 universities in greece were been occupied by the students{with the support of the majority of the students and professors}.The goverment was forced to back down but the battle isnt over yet.For the past 10 days primary and secondary greek schools are not operating because the teachers have declared a ongoing strike demanding wage increases(average wage of a teacher is 700euroes}.and with the support of the students have created a strong progressive front which is resisting the state and bosses. With the goverment spending only 3% of the GDP per year on education and having created an educational system were only 50% of students continue to higher education, and forcing the youth either to find a job which dosn't require any skills or turning students to enroll at private institutions (GNVQS )which require lots of money and are not very recognisable in the work spectrum as far as pursuing a job which youve studied. Another example on how universities and education has been downgraded by the state and bosses is that there are thousands of teachers, doctors, artists, etc who have finished higher education and are forced to work for a minimum wage on jobs such as supermarket employes or delivery workers simply because capitalism cannot provide work for them. Capitalism sees schools as labour camps which prepare children to work for bosses in useless jobs which dont help the people but gives the bosses profits. The student movement resisted the junta which was stored from 1967 - 1974 and during the 80's and 90's it resisted all the measures which the state and the bosses tried to pass.WE WILL NEVER FORGET MICHALIS KALTESAS,KANELOPOULOU,KOUMIS,TEBONERAS who were murdered by the state and capitalists.THE BATTLE CONTINUES! WE ARE ALL IMMIGRANTS! (A)
