UKLGIG AGM - 30th September

UK Gay and Lesbian Immigration Group Press Release | 25.09.2006 18:47 | Anti-racism | Gender

This is the Annual General Meeting of members of UKLGIG. Our loyal members have supported us through the 12 years of patient work which resulted in the unmarried partners rule and now equality in immigration treatment for same sex partners though the Civil Partnership Act. Our members can be justifiably proud of the part they have played in this revolution.

As well as wishing to support our work and receive information and details of social events, members may also wish to be involved in the running of the organisation. Many members have energy, time and resources to offer and want to maintain regular contact with us. Members have a right to vote on issues affecting the organisation at Annual General Meetings and Special General Meetings. Attendance at the AGM - at which a new Executive Committee is elected to manage the organisation for the next year - is one of the responsibilities of members.

The Group has now shifted it's focus onto support for lesbian & gay asylum seekers. Such people may have fled persecution and violence in their home countries, only to find they are ostracized from their own communities here in the UK. "The Home office works to build a safe, just and tolerant society", but leaves many without proper legal representation to fight their asylum claims.

The Asylum Seekers Support Project has now been running for a year and we will report on the progress to date. The Group has established a solid reputation for constructive dialogue in many circles including within the government itself. We have made a good start, but the challenges are huge and we need your support more than ever.
