environment sec david milliband has unveiled the new office for climate change-CC

this from the press assoc via guardian unlimited 4.23PM

plans for better co-ordination of whitehall CC policy have been unveiled by the govt. environment sec. david miliband said ministers have agreed to the new office of climate change-OCC, its scope, role and initial work plan.

the OCC will support ministers as they decide future UK strategy & policy on domestic & international CC, providing high-level management & reporting on progress on existing commitments.

it will consolidate existing analysis to develop cross-govt consensus on current progress & outstanding issues.

the OCC will also identify short & medium term goals for particular sectors & areas & consequent priorities for action.

the new body will carry out time-limited, policy-focused projects where ministers agree that this adds value (?)

it will promote understanding of CC across govt & supporting depts & encourage them to adapt their policies.

mr. miliband said- CC is one of the biggest problems facing the UK & the world (!) & we need to ensure that the action we are taking as a govt is co-ordinated & as effective as possible. the new office of climate change will help us meet that challenge.
-the OCC will be a key resource to help us acheive the challenging targets we have set to reduce CO2 emissions by 60% by 2050.
-the office will co-ordinate CC across govt based on SOUND OBJECTIVE ANALYSIS & drive forward progress on CC policy & strategy.

with thanks to PA. verbatim i hope.

fuckin' greenwash - come to October instead...

23.09.2006 18:02

yeah yeah, we should all change our lightbulbs, continue driving (maybe with biodiesel, oh the green revolution get's me so excited...) and certainly not challenge the economic growth model...

Or...

we could go to the mid-October meeting in Manchester to evaluate the climate camp, and decide what next, and push the agenda towards a sane possible existence of a future for all, rather than eco-catastrophe and death for all but the richest...

Check out the climate camp website for full details of the meeting, or if you can't make it, get on the announcements list of their website, and we'll take the huge positive energy from this year's successful Camp for Climate Action, and see what we can do next year, and the year after.....
