294 political prisoners in Cuba

The Cuban Commission for Human Rights and National Reconciliation (CCDHRN) said in a report today that Cuba currently has 294 political prisoners, as against 317 at the start of 2005. CCDHRN president Elizardo Sánchez said the number was still high and the slight fall in the past 12 months was not enough to be able to talk of any policy shift by the government, which cracked down on any expression of dissident views, he said.

The report said at least 21 people were jailed for political reasons in 2004. It also noted that the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the UN Commission for Human Rights are still denied access to Cuba’s prisons by the Cuban government.
