Time to go from Sheffield to Manchester reaches Glossop

RORS | 21.09.2006 18:36 | Anti-militarism | Sheffield

Support and publicity in Glossop tonight

We set off this morning at 11.10. Very sunny. Mostly up hill today but gentle slopes to start off with. We left Hayfield at 3.10 and passed historic William Clough, the site of the Kinder mass trespass. Then Glossop is in sight - all down hill - sore feet. The dog was sick and had to be carried.

Arrived Glossop ay 5.30 to a warm welcome including banners and flags with a reception at the Labour Club.

Our being here results in a front page story in today's Glossop Advertiser."

update - Friday afternoon

22.09.2006 13:22

OK, I know these reports are not wildly exciting but a group of people are doing this walk and I think that is just worth noting here. These brief reports are just dependant on occassional texts received but I do get the feeling that by doing this there is engagement with people and communities that would not otherwise be taking place.

So, the news today is that the group met the press in Glossop this morning before continuing. They reached Godley for 2.15 pm and are now on route to Hyde mosque.

They were briefly stopped by police and a press photographer en route.

Glossop Rules

Your updates are great. Anything which involves tales of the centre of revolutionary activity which is Glossop deserves a mention. Most people don't even stop there on their way to Manchester.

How was the Labour Club last night? (yes we we do like the 'little' details - its makes your article very human).

Arrived

22.09.2006 18:48

The group from Sheffield arrived at St Peter's Square Manchester at 7.30 pm Friday. Earlier they had stopped in a cafe in Gorton to escape the rain. At the mosque in Hyde they were interviewed by Al Jazeera who said "nice band but we were ex[pecting more people"!

recreational protest

23.09.2006 17:00

what you are involved is pure middle class recreational protest.a jolly nice day out for you and an excuse to be with people who all totally agree with themselves.....if you had to go out and to use your powers of conversational persuation to get more people to join you rather than attend football matches on a saturday your success rate woild be poor....blair is not listening and niether is his successor.....if you put as much effort into persuading people to bother to vote(and i always vote) rather than chanting your slogans and banging your drums ect ect you might achieve something.you will never again get the numbers that attended the february 15th 2003 demo in london......its over mass protest on a scale like that is dead...you blew it you had for a short time massive mainstream support and you blew it.
