Orange Men Found wandering round Sheffield..

King Billy of Tapton Hall Masonic Lodge. | 18.09.2006 15:40 | Sheffield

Saturday was always going to be a little strange...

So there you are, your camera has just come back from repair and, well f...k me what's the Babylon doing on push bike and motor, Helicopter above stopping the traffic on Hunters Bar Roundabout. Get some images, alright, cover me at the back and left. Never have i taken images like this before, as you can see: some of them spotted me.

We soon legged it to a safe place, downloaded them to a hardrive then talked about what we was going to with them. It was agreed to publish them in all their surreal splendour (can you spot King William, aged just 7).

About 500 Orangemen, women and children from Glagow, Toxteth and Derry set off from the Masonic Lodge on Shore Lane at about 3pm Saturday 16th Sept. They paraded onto Fulwood road, down Clarkehouse road past the Botanical Gardens and then up Rustlings Road to the Park at past Endcliffe.

I have seen them wandering around central London but Sheffield, that's the least of places that I expected to see them. They must have took the wrong turning somewhere.

So what?

So what? Members of a perfectly legal, non-violent UK organisation legitimately exercise their democratic rights and assert their political and cultural identity by marching around a city in the UK, after due consultation with the police. Good on them. Makes a change from all those tedious, talentless samba bands.

Good for them

The Nazis on VNN are crowing about this church parade as if it was some sort of victory for them, and want to know where Anifa and 'the Reds' were! Why the fuck would antifascists bother about a few daft old men walking about round a Sheffield suburb with their grandkids?

Who really cares?

A bit wierd, but from the video the march doesn't look all that different to the church parades I used to go on with the Boys Brigade in the same area when I was a kid. Not my cup of tea, nor the colours they are flying, but it doesn't look anything sinister, certainly very different to Drumcree and Garvaghy Rd - An excuse for bloody triumphalism and the intimidation of small pockets of Nationalists. Who really cares if a few old boys want to march down Rustlings Road, better they do it here than in Ireland.

The small number of fascist nutters trying to make a big deal about this are pathetic, and I'm sure are unwanted by most of those who follow the Orange tradition, despite their links in the past.

Sofa-soaking Sid Williamson on VNN: "Very good footage comrade, I only wish I'd been there myself." - Try getting out of your chair then you worthless tosser!

Found out that the parade was organised nationally by the Orange Order to commerate local Orangeman John Bingham, who gave a park to the people of Sheff (Bingham Park is where the parade finished up).

Orangemen popped up in Scarborough last year and Peterborough the year before, the local orange lodge is in Handsworth. Some old guy from there was the local contact for last saturday's parade, if they're thinking of organising a similar march next year we will ensure it will not happen, just a nod in the right direction.

if they have paid ......

if the orange order handsworth lodge have paid their parades levy then they have a legitimate right to march with police escort through the streets of sheffield.and any way those pipes and drums are impressive they can play beautifully and in time......

Just seen this article & i'm annoyed!

I like Indymedia and have worked closely with a Indymedia photographer & writer on a project & should be doing so again in the near future. I regulaly help organise free parties round Sheffield and am quite into the scene that goes with it. I run a small organic piece of land & project that promotes sustainable living & recycling & try to undermine the far right in its campaigns round my area.

Now my family are originally from Northern Ireland & emigrated to North West England in the 1950s. My grandfather & Mother were a members of Orange lodges in Manchester until the late 80s. I was asked as I was in the juniors to carry a banner on this parade & why not? It was to celebrate an Orange Man who donated a large piece of land to the people of Sheffield.
I did not see any Neo Nazi bone heads & if it was known that Nazis were trying to hijack the parade they would of been dealt with and the police informed. I know for a fact that Nazis arnt generally welcome on parades in Manchester. Though I think the Orange lodges should do more to discouraged them from attending there parades.

All in all these events are colourful and brighten up an otherwise dreary Saturday afternoon. In this day and age there harmless and its just a case of keeping an old tradition alive its living history. I have lots of fond childhood memories with the Orange lodge & look forward to attending more in the near future.
