The other 11th of September, the Catalan Nation carries on the fight

melic | 12.09.2006 02:38

On the 11th September 1714 the Catalan Nation lost its capital to the hands of the Castillian troops, initiating a long a bloody period of systematic destruction of the Catalan language and culture.

Today on the 11th of September 2006, another year of struggle in which our people has come out to the streets to demand the Spanish government to return what is ours by right, the right to be free.

Great, more nationalism, just what the world needs. Never mind though, there's hammer and sickle logos in the pictures, so if they're stalinist nationalists then thats ok then? I'd rather see or a world without borders, or concepts of race or nation, and you don't move closer to that by promoting nationalism

I wonder

to the best of my understanding (all updates welcome) the banner reads something like FROM THE INDEPENDANT LEFT: LETS CONSTRUCT POPULAR UNITY

doesnt sound very stalinist to me, but then i may be mistaken, who knows?

Hello I'm catalan.

Extreme leftism is the cancer of catalan fight for freedom, and it is secretly encouraged by the spanish secret police. But we are all weaking up...

Europeans don't turn your back on the Catalan Countries. Don't think it's not your problem. Catalonia is one of the eldest nations in Europe.

Let's go towards a Europe of nations, not a Europe of states.

>Extreme leftism is the cancer of catalan fight for freedom, and it is secretly encouraged by the spanish secret police.

If by this you mean that "extreme" left internationalism/ anarchism is opposed to nationalism, then yes, and so it should be! No doubt the spanish state sees catalan/basque etc nationalism as a greater threat than anarchism at the moment, so its no suprise that they might be happy to see nationalist ideas opposed by anarchists. But really, so what? The fact that the Spanish State doesn't like "small nation" nationalism within its borders doesn't automatically make that nationalism a good thing. I don't support things just because the Spanish state opposes them.

>Let's go towards a Europe of nations, not a Europe of states.

How about going towards a world human community free of states or nationalism? Unlikely I know, but a lot more likely than a world of nations which choose not to form states to defend their national interests against the other nations...

PRAGMATISM/solidarnosc

its all very well being SUPER-idealistic if thats what you want to be, but to my mind its just a load of mental masturbation. we have to start from where we are now and my reading of the situation leads me to support all genuine liberation struggles including those of oppressed nations. i think it is possible for nations to be oppressed as such by other NATION STATES that are more IMPERIALISTIC than they are. the spanish state does not want to let go of CATALONIA or BASQUE COUNTRY because they are too much of an asset for one reason. sure there are other reasons and subtleties, i'm no expert. these types of comment interchanges where you just diss other peoples ideas seem like NEGATIVISTIC MENTALISM to me, but as always i try to remain OPEN-minded.

PS. personally i would like the so-called UNITED KINGDOM to be dis-united and for wales/scotland/ENGLAND to be separate NATIONS. i would also like to see ireland/EIRE made whole again. thats my personal opinion, (SHARED BY SOME others?)
