On Saturday 26th August 30 000 people tried to storm the local offices of Asia Energy, a London-based mining company that owns the right to 570m tonnes of coal in Bangladesh's Phulbari. Paramilitries fired on the crowd killing six and injuring 300.

There have been days of rioting after the six deaths on saturday who were protesting against the UK firm, Asia Energy's plans for a massive mine to be built in north-east Bangladesh. Roads and railways have been blockaded with burning logs. Activists claim 100,000 people will be displaced and the issue of rehabilitation is controversial.
