Police Obstruction of Media around Climate Camp and Drax - call out for reports

n | 01.09.2006 13:50 | Climate Camp 2006 | Climate Chaos | Indymedia | Repression

Throughout the week there have been reports of police harassment of journalists, videographers and photographers. Some have been obstructed while filming or taking pictures, others have been prevented from passing along public highways or footpaths. Some have been repeatedly subjected to searches while trying to cover events taking place around Drax...

It would be great to get such reports all in one place and look at making complaints against the officers and forces involved. If you experienced such harressment, please post a comment here outlining the incident and perhaps (if you are happy to do so, leaving an email address so that you can be contacted).

Also, please post videos or photos of these incidents if possible.

You might also considering contacting the media or legal team at the climate camp.

Hi. Just thought I would fire off a quick msg about the policing at the climate camp. I thought it was pretty much as good and as reasonable as you could have hoped for.
Yes, I was stopped and searched several times - my last count was 11 times on Thurs and maybe 5 times on Wed but it was always in a fairly polite and respectful manner and when, of course, nothing was found I was allowed on my way with an appology. Yes, there were masses of Police in presence, however, estimates put the numder of protestors planning to attend at sopme 2'000 thus justifying the presence.
'Operation Harmony' it certinally was and I think that we should be grateful that we have a Poilice force that does actually try and respect civil freedoms. Thank god we are not in Italy, Spain, Russia or The USA where I have witnessed and on one occasion been a victim of totally OTT and unacceptable Police behaviour.

I have been a photographer for AP for almost 12 years and have covered major demonstrations worldwide and am USUALLY impressed with how our British Police force undertakes policing protest events. I have seen some untoward behaviour of course but that is the nature of the beast. I have to say that I am also very impressed with the protestors themselves. Thought U guys were excellent and certinally promoted your event in the best way possible by there being very little trouble and has brought the issue of climate change to the fore. I hope future demonstrations are just like this one and dont result in the usual demonstrators v Police stand off until one side snaps and a big battle ensues.

Thanks, I like this site, i will write again!
