Climate Camp Kids Walk to Drax Power Station - Pics and Report

At around 2:45 today aproximatly 30 people, in a group consisting of children and parents left the climate camp for a stroll through the country side towards Drax Power Station.

Leaving the camp to walk to Drax, the small group was followed all the way by policemen walking behind them and with more random police popping up from bushes and behind trees along the route!

As well as the police on foot, there were 3 police vans, a car with police dogs and a police 4x4 vehicle taking pictures and video of the parents and kids. When the small group reached the perimeter the children and parents spent some time walking around the fence, eventually taking a tea break. With a good day out had by the kids the group set off back to the camp (complete with their accompanying police).

Although the police were constantly warning the group of dangers in the road and attempting to be friendly, the group was never actually stopped and no-one was searched. At some point the commanding offered to 'facilitate' the walk, to which parents responded that there wasn't much need for 'facilitation', just' to have a stroll in a country lane.

Like we said, a good walk in the country!

Well done to all involved it must of taken some clear mapping to find the power station.

Peace will break us through

Great idea in theory, but surely time would be better spent encouraging people to stop using so much power. Stop the demand for so much power - job done!

Good idea Joe

I had not thought of that! do you want to do it or shall I? I've got a spare five minutes later... shall I just give the BBC a call and arrange a public address?

hi joe,

yep agree.

that's why the camp has 150 workshops, many of which focus on
a) how to reduce your energy usage
b) how to encourage your community to reduce energy consumption
c) how to campaign and lobby at a national and international level on this issue.

then there's some direct action against some of the villains.

sure they supply a demand, but they are in no way guilt free in this.

people need to tackle both sides, indeed all sides, at the same time, now.

good luck to us all.

Dont know how old all this is, but i came across it whilst writing a report on Drax Power Station. I find it hard to believe that people with such strong morals and obviously very intelligent can be so blind to realism. HOW THE HELL can you just 'shut a power station down' that provides a massive 7% of the UK's energy and electricity demand??? It produces a huge amount of CO2 yes, but thats down to the fact that its a huge power station, one of the 2nd largest in Europe if i believe. In addition it is one of the most efficient and clean power plants in the UK, why not whinge about the others? Because you arent doing yourself any favours by targetting Drax. Try looking at what Drax is doing to REDUCE emissions!
