Police harass climate camp

Climate camper | 28.08.2006 15:09 | Climate Camp 2006 | Climate Chaos

The police presence outside the Camp for Climate Action ( http://www.climatecamp.org.uk/) has been slowly building, with constant pressure for them to be allowed entry. This came to a head early this afternoon when they threatened to enter forcibly.

After hasty discussions a compromise was reached that would see a small number of police allowed to enter the site escorted, on condition that they didn't film or search tents. This was then rejected by the police, who insisted they wanted unrestricted access at any time.

So far, they haven't actually attempted to enter the site by force, although the police helicopter has continued to make regular surveillance/intimidation flights over the camp.

update on police situation

28.08.2006 18:54

The police have backed down for the day and liaison continues to take place. For the moment the police's bluff and unreasonable demands have been called. The atmosphere on camp remains in high spirits and people are continuing on as normal, going to workshops, discussing and enjoying themselves. Today saw an excellent example of an emergency spokescouncil in place and working successfully - not perfect but a great step forward. Numbers continue to grow.
