Sack Parliament - October 9th 2006

Sack Parliament * Stop their wars
9th October - 1pm - Houses of Parliament

Over the past few years the UK parliament and government have led this country into war upon war, torn up age-old rights and made the division between rich and poor to grow ever wider. Despite only 22% of the electorate voting for them the Labour party has suppressed any opposition to its legislation, whilst opposition parties have continued to offer them a veil of legitimacy by engaging in weak debate rather than denouncing this one-party state.

Despite repeated mass protests parliament has ignored those it is supposed to represent and consistently sided with continuing wars and further authoritarian legislation.

We have only one option left: Sack parliament
We must sack parliament because:
* It has been complicit in the war of terror and the continued destruction of Iraq and Afghanistan
* It has failed to condemn and challenge acts of state terror and collective punishment from Lebanon and Palestine to all those illegally interned in Guantanamo Bay and Belmarsh
* It has helped erode our civil rights: the right to free movement, free assembly and free speech have been undermined with curfews, ‘no protest’ zones, ASBOs and increased police power

MPs and Lords return from their summer recess on October 9th. We need to ensure they can’t get back inside Parliament to stop them spreading their culture of fear.

Take part! Stop them continuing their wars.

Please visit the website -  http://www.sackparliament.org.uk - for updates, and details of past actions.

This action came out of the emergency assembly called to discuss a direct action response to the Lebanon/ Israel war, Iraq, Afghanistan and the continuing insecurity around the globe. In the past three weeks the assembly has facilitated six actions, including the blockade of Brize Norton and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office

We meet every Tuesday at 7pm at LARC -  http://www.londonarc.org/ - on 52 Fieldgate Street.

There seems to be a bunch of negativity abounding at the moment, so I'm pre-empting it, and saying this looks awesome. Lets make it clear to the politicians that we're their bosses, and they're in a shedload of trouble!!

Myself and quite a few of my friends who like me have never taken part in anything like this have decided we will come to London on the 9thOct to show our disgust at Tony Blair and his government

We need YOU!

27.08.2006 21:05

This is going to be fantastic. It doesn't matter if you have never been to anything like this in your life, come on down. It doesn't matter if you are coming on your own, come on down. It doesn't matter if you are scared shitless, come on down, you will be alright. Without you, there will be no demonstration. You ARE needed, you WILL make a difference. Without you, we will fail.

See you there!

Dear oh dear

23.09.2006 21:40

I'm sorry if I'm pissing on anybody's bonfire here, but exactly what do you folks hope to achieve here?

I mean, how different is this from marching from A to B, really, in terms of results?

maybe

24.09.2006 21:42

maybe we should just spend our "political" lives posting on libcom madashell? That'll learn 'em!

peaceful revolution :)

26.09.2006 15:29

….but exactly what do you folks hope to achieve here?

well since we are all of and really for “the people” everywhere – the unlimited imagination of a human being, including towards opportunity can be a truly beautiful thing.

peaceful revolution is always possible :) and must begin somewhere....

Peaceful revolution is like miniature King Prawn...

27.09.2006 03:34

That's just a lot of rhetoric though.

What actual real world effects do you expect this action to have? Assuming that it is successful.

Cars Fuel War

28.09.2006 21:53

People travelling to London from all over the country to protest is simply a waste of fuel. It's fuel consumption that is creating the need for war in the first place. If you are really against war then get rid of your cars.
But that might mean a lifestyle change.
Whereas pointless protest means nothing.

Are you all cycling to London?

29.09.2006 10:20

Are you all cycling to London then? The point I was trying to make is that lifestyle changes will do more to stop wars than protests will.
Valid criticism of recreational protestors is not infighting.

Live in hope!

06.10.2006 13:15

I'm going to this direct action on monday 1pm @ OUR houses parliament. The time to act is now! End the leathergy, apathy and disullisonment that tempts us all. Marching on a saturday afternoon does not seem to do anything to stop the UK government's war march and errosion of civil liberties, something else must be done. I live in hope that our voice will be heard! And goddamn I'm going to try!

Protests vs. lifestyle changes

07.10.2006 19:14

The problem I have, Irma, with advocating lifestyle changes, is that it assumes that individuals can choose to make all the changes that would be necessary to give us a better world. But that's not the case - most of us need to work for capitalists (and so prop up capitalism), we need to use oil-burning transport at least some of the time (to get to work, to get to the shops - the only way of providing ourselves with the neccessities of life, under capitalism). We need to change the whole system, and I don't think we can do that by just choosing to change our lifestyles; we need collective political action. Obviously, a protest like this is largely symbolic, but it also helps produce the social relations between protestors that might allow for a more long-term assault on the capitalist state.
