Israel mounts new air raids on Lebanon

Israel is Going Down | 19.08.2006 13:37 | Lebanon War 2006 | Anti-militarism

Obviously having no intention of observing its own ceasefire, in an act of unparralled cynicism, Israeli warplanes and helicopters launched fresh raids in eastern Lebanon today.

Lebanese and Hezbollah security forces said that the strike took place just after dawn around the village of Bodai, west of Baalbek in the Bekaa Valley.

Hezbollah television later reported its guerrillas clashed with Israeli commandos near Bodai and forced them to retreat under the cover of air strikes.

It is the first time Israeli warplanes have attacked Lebanon since a cease-fire, put into effect on August 14, halted 34-days of Zionist bloodshed.

So far the war has claimed 1,183 Lebanese – most of them civilians.

Lebanon has now threatened to halt troop deployments to the south after Israel breached its own truce.

Hezbollah fighters battled the Israeli commando force that landed early yesterday west of their stronghold of Baalbek, killing an Israeli officer and wounding two other Israeli soldiers deep inside Lebanon.

Defence Minister Elias Murr threatened to halt deployment of Lebanese troops if the UN did not intervene against Israel.

Despite claims from Israel that the raid was launched to stop arms smuggling to Hezbollah fighters, Shaikh Mohammad Yazbeck, a senior Hezbollah official in the Bekaa and a member of the group's executive council, was more likely to have been the target.

Would you be critising Israel if it was an arab country?

Would you be critising Israel if it were an arab or muslim country? If so why don't you critise Nigeria a muslim country where women are stoned to death for adultery or Suadia Arabia which has amongst the worst human rights record in the world. Or how about Syria which illegally occuppied Lebanon for 20 years?
