Peace Cycle sets off.

Lots of cyclists turned up in support of the first part of the Peace Ride from London to Greenwich.

The Peace Riders range from a seventy-year-old man who was a member of the African National Congress during the apartheid era, a fourteen year school kid to Iranians and Palestinians who for the first time in their lives may be allowed entry to Israel as a special group dispensation for the cyclists.

The organisation behind this - The Peace Cycle – aims to not only raise awareness of the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, but to show solidarity with the Palestinian people by making this epic journey to their country. The group will raise funds for a Palestinian to fly to London and join the journey all the way back to Jerusalem. He will cycle alongside Israeli cyclists who are joining the campaign for peace.

The journey will take them through France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Syria, Jordan, Israel and Palestine. The punishing regime will include cycling an average of 100km a day in Europe, including conquering the Alps, and then 50km a day in the Middle East.

In the major cities of Europe and the Middle East the cyclists and organisers will be meeting with the press and key political figures to raise awareness of the situation in Israel and Palestine.
