Coulport Nuke Base Blockaded

Slarti | 25.07.2006 07:41 | Anti-militarism

As the Trident Replacement decision looms ever larger, activists once again disrupted the current Trident Nuclear Weapons System as they blockaded the entrance to RNAD Coulport. Five activists, calling themselves The Shrubbery, chained themselves together across the entrance way shortly after 7am this morning, stopping workers from entering the base.

A spokesperson for the group said "The Government keeps promising a public debate on whether Trident should be replaced yet, despite claiming to want to make the decision this year, running scared when asked to actually join in such a debate. Meanwhile, they're spending millions of pounds on new facilities at AWE Aldermaston 'just in case'"

"This is too important to be swept out of site, and not just because it could cost £40 billion. The decision made in the next few months is about how we as a country approach the world for the next 50 years: Will we continue the shameful, arrogant, bullying and illegal strategy of threatening Nuclear Annihilation or will we take a stand for peace and security and dare to hope that we might have a world left to leave to our children and grandchildren?"

"We need to not just object politely to the idea that we should build a new generation of Nuclear Weapons at this point, we need to actually stop it happening."

There will be more actions at Coulport and Faslane as the Trident Ploughshares Disarmament Camp starts on Saturday (29 July) and runs for two weeks.

Good news for TP

26.07.2006 09:15

The longstanding prosecution / persecution of the Pitstop Ploughshares affinity group of activists in Eire has finally ended after 3 years. During this time, and over two previous trials that were abandoned because the judiciary were politically compromised with links to the Bush regime, the Pitstop crew have been prevented from leaving Eire. I hope that they are due some compensation for their tribulations.

Delight at Important Acquittal of Pitstop Ploughshares

The Trident Ploughshares camp in Coulport, near Faslane, is being setup. If you have never visited a peace camp before then this is a great place to start, they are a very mature, active and inspirational bunch of people. Even if you don't intend getting arrested yourselves it is a great place to learn the techniques and theory of NVDA.
