There's a bit less SPEW in Stoke-on-Trent

The Socialist Party of England and Wales (SPEW), formerly the Militant Tendency, had two city councillors in the city of Stoke before the 2006 local elections.

Both of these councillors had defected from the Labour party to SPEW during their previous electoral period.

However, the one that was up for election in May 2006 only managed to come third in his seat!

NB: SPEW are known as SALT (Socialist Alternative, as the Socialist Party name belongs to another group in England and Wales).

In fact, the Labour party did not regain the seat either managing only second place. Can anybody guess who won - well it was the BNP.

Doesn't really bode well for the left alternative electoral strategy in the coming period.

The BNP gained two other seats in Stoke bringing their tally to five on Stoke city council.

With Respect in crisis by divisely targetting the Muslim vote, where can the British left go from here?
