Is this racist against gypsies/travellers?

An advert for a mobile phone screen saver with racist content?

The issue concerns racism, in this case racism towards gypsies or travellers. The offending article was a mobile phone graphic which appeared in ‘The Star TV mag’, a free TV listings guide with the Daily Star. Date of publication was 17th June 2006, the magazine is for the week of the 17th to the 23rd of June 2006.

On the back page is an advert for MaxMob, a company dealing in mobile phone tones and games and screensavers and wallpapers and so on.

One of the wallpapers, listed as 30907, shows the Nike logo, with the words ‘Pikey, just nick it’. I would categorise this as racially bigoted and also put forward the proposition that it is also classist, but thats not my argument.

If this is racist, then I hope someone can email it to one of the travellers organisations - I have the publication still if that is needed.

Regards from Liverpool.
