Save The Cemetery free event - Sunday 9 July

imcemetery | 06.07.2006 09:24 | Ecology | Free Spaces | Social Struggles | Sheffield

To raise awareness and register opposition to the planned development of luxury flats on the site a free party (with license) will take place in the general cemetery on Sunday 9th July.

Save the Cemetery

The site is on Cemetry road, near the Vine pub (5 mins from Ecclesall Rd) Sheffield. For those of you a bit confused, it's where peace in the park was this year and is a valuable and rare public space which deserves to be preserved for the community, not sold off to make some dosh for the council and random developers.

The music will kick off about 12 midday with some acoustic slots and progress to DJ's later. The event will finish by 9pm. If you are able to attend at some point to support the cause with your presence and have a bit of fun try not to make a mess of the area as that will undermine the case for preserving public access somewhat!

Currently DJ contributions are expected from Sequoia Sound System, NTA and Planet Zogg (there may be others).

There will be an oppportunity to sign the petition opposing the development at the event. You can do this online at:  http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/saveourchapel

For those of you who wish to register your opposition to the proposed development of the General Cemetery on Cemetry Road - and this should be everyone apart from those who wish to build or purchase the exclusive luxury apartments it will create - you can register your opposition directly with the council by following this link:

 http://planning.sheffield.gov.uk/publicaccess/DC/dc_home.aspx

(It used to be easier but some links have unaccountably stopped working...)

Then from the menu on the left, choose 'application search'.

Input the application reference into the box at the top, which for
the chapel is 06/01866/FUL

Hit the 'search' button.

One planning application will come up. Hit 'click to view' on the
right, next to the application.

The details of the application will come up, then hit 'submit
comments' on the left nr the top.

Hopefully in this case, resistance is far from futile!
