Picket against Townhouse this friday 7th July
Antifascist | 02.07.2006 19:40 | Anti-racism
In response of the ongoing disgusting behaviour of Townhouse door staff and their tendency of discriminating towards people of colour, we will be picketing on their doorstep on Friday 7th July to show them that we don`t agree with their racist door policy.
Join us on Friday 7th July, meeting at 11pm in front of the Common place, 23 – 25 Wharf street, Leeds.

Denied entry to TownHouse, Leeds because of the colour of my skin
Ismaila Jatta | 04.06.2006 01:51 | Anti-racism | Leeds Bradford
It was saturday the 3rd of June when my friend and I were queueing up like everyone else, but as I look up I saw a coloured young man being denied entry, at first I though it must be due to his outfit or something else, but just before we get close to the doors, a doorman came up to me asking if we were together.
I answered yes and he then point blank said "not tonigh mate", at first I though he was joking but then as we draw nearer to the gates they just said "step out of the queue" as if we were come kind of animal, at least thats how I felt, I left belittled, humilated and discrimated against just because my colour.
and the worst thing was there two police officers present and they didn't say anything or do anything to help calm the situation in anyway. I though, as a tax paying individual I am entitled to go out and have fun just like anybody, but to be denied access just because of my colour is just not on. Apperently, a lot of coloured people have been stopped or denied entry to Townhouse, Leeds before without any reason whatever.
They might as well have put up signs saying "No Blacks" "Whites Only" because that's exactly what they practice over there. Its shamefull on the management on townHouse. how can you do business like that.
Town House, Leeds is 100% RACIST.

It was Saturday 17th June around 11:45 pm when myself and 3 of my black friends decided to move from a pub and have a drink at Townhouse.
Two of my friends arrived first as two of us grabbed a quick sandwich, when we got to the door I saw that they were still outside but not in the queue, when I asked them what happened they told me that the bouncers didn`t let them in and they were asked to step out of the queue without telling them why while people behind them where allowed in. They were both wearing dress shoes (i.e. no trainers) and properly dressed (i.e. no sportswear) and not drunk at all as we only had two drinks earlier that evening. Then I recalled what I read in Indymedia a couple of weeks ago about the same sort of incident happening there. So I decided to try to get in on my own as I`m white, and as I expected they let me in with no problem even though I was wearing trainers and I wasn`t as well dressed as them. So once I got the go ahead from the bouncer I explained to him that my three friends were with me; his reaction was to tell me that if that was the case I would have to step outside the club. Obviously to such a blatantly racist reply I tried to find out what was his argument why they now denied me entrance when two seconds ago and before telling him about my three black friends he was happy to let me in; The only answer I got from the manager of the bouncers was that they didn`t discuss the door policy. As I tried to find out the reasons behind such a racist decision he started to get really angry and stressed and he pushed me out of the door. I did not react to his provocation, instead I went to talk to a black bouncer that was there but he very nicely just said the other guy was the manager and it was his decision; you could see that he clearly knew that this was a frequent occurrence there but he obviously couldn`t say anything .
Boycott Townhouse, don`t give your money to a racist business like this.

a few thoughts
05.07.2006 12:39
I had a few thoughts I thought might be worthwhile to share,
You could post a review at http://www.itchyleeds.co.uk/index.html?mod=nboard&action=nboard&venueboardid=691
And
http://www.worldsbestbars.com/city/leeds/townhouse-leeds.htm
which might bring out others who have had similar experiences.
The reviews of this club (which I’ve not been to and can’t say I’d enjoy) tend to be mixed and I suspect you’ll find that most won’t give a shit about if the door staff are racist –as long as they themselves get in.
The problem is that if the bar won’t state its door policy then its hard to find evidence it is racist. There are a number of ways –keeping track of who they let in and turn away, and being refused and getting a ‘white’ person to wear your clothes and seeing if they get in (that might be good for a ‘hidden’ camera).
I’m not particularly pro the protest root before you’ve got have more evidence other than your own experience. –after you protest you won’t be able to gather evidence because they will be on guard.
-I’d assume the police to be heavily handed if the picketing is in away noisy (abusive or intimidating) but flyers and a samba band might help (would also go against the argument that the group is aggressive). –The Leeds Racial Equality Council might be a good bet –especially if you can get one of the councillors to come down for the protest. –but again if you got more evidence you might have more luck with that.
Anyway,
Good luck!
